“The Leftovers” Season 1 Episode 3 “Two Boats and a Helicopter” aired on July 13, 2014. It was directed by Keith Gordon and written by Damon Lindelof and Jacqueline Hoyt. Reverend Matt Jamison’s (Christopher Eccleston) life was now a mess. He was about to lose his church from the back. It was said that he didn’t pay for the costs for weeks. His very small congregation continued to lessen. He even thought that his “prayers” worked a miracle for the previously brain-dead child named Emily. Unfortunately, the kid worked up the night before his sermon.
He was not happy when he learned that he wasn’t included among those who disappeared, whom he considered as sinners. To get at them, Matt self-published all the scandals that the Departeds had done before the unfateful event. One man, who was connected with his latest hot topic, beat him senselessly and got him to the hospital. It seemed that it was a usual occurence when Kevin Garvey (Justin Theroux) visited him.
Back to his money problem, Matt went to his sister, Nora (Carrie Coon), to ask for some money. The talk was good and innocent until Matt talked about Nora’s cheating husband. In the end, Matt needed to find another source of money, and he found it in a desperate man. The man told him about a Departed named Andrew who used all up his kid’s funds in a casino.
Matt immediately went to Kevin’s house to retrieve a secret stash owned by Kevin Sr. Laurie (Amy Brenneman) was there but refused to talk due to her promise with the Guilty Remnants. Matt went inside and found thousands of dollars wrapped in a newsletter inside a peanut butter jar. The money was wrapped with a note saying that it was actually for Matt from Kevin Sr.
Later, Matt was seen inside the casino. He bet all of his money to the roulette table where he saw a pigeon on top in his vision/dream. That day was actually a lucky one for Matt as he won the money that he needed for the payments. When a tattooed man tried to get his money, Matt successfully avoided him. He was on his way to his church when a GR member needed his help. Unfortunately, the assailant also threw a rock that knocked him out.
During his medically induced sleep, Matt dreamed again about his childhood with Nora and the accident that caused his life to shatter. It was said that he and his wife, Mary, were involved in an accident in “Pilot.” The driver from the other car disappeared, while Mary sustained a brain injury.
Back to the present, Matt woke up. He wanted to make the payment already so he could save his church. He didn’t know that he was in an unconcious state for days. He then learned that the mystery buyers of his church were the members of the Guilty Remnants.
