“The Legend of Korra” Season 4 Episode 10 “Operation Beifong” aired last Friday, Dec. 5, 2014, on the Nickelodeon website and the Nickelodeon application. In this episode, Bolin (P.J. Byrne), Lin Beifong (Mindy Sterling) and Opal (Alyson Stoner) rescued Su Beifong (Anne Heche) and the rest of her family with some unexpected help from the Beifong matriarch, Toph Beifong (Philece Sampler). In the process, they also dealt with Kuvira (Zelda Williams) in an unexpected blow and gained an ally. Meanwhile, in Republic City, Asami Sato (Seychelle Gabriel) and Varrick (John Michael Higgins) tried to create a counter measure to Kuvira’s super weapon, while Avatar Korra (Janet Varney) negotiated with the spirits to help them save Republic City from Kuvira. Read on to learn more about this episode.

In Republic City, Asama Sat (Seychelle Gabriel) and Varrick (John Michael Higgins) presented their counter measure against Kuvira’s (Zelda Williams) super weapon — a flying mecha tank. President Raiko (Spencer Garrett) was then told that they would not use any spirit vines to counter Kuvira’s spirit vine weapon as her harvesting of the vines was precisely what caused the spirit vines to attack the residents of Republic City. Prince Wu (Sunil Malhotra) then suggested that the citizens of Republic City be evacuated to protect them from Kuvira’s impending attack, and Avatar Korra (Janet Varney) decided to plead with the spirits in the city to help save the humans from Kuvira’s wrath.

After she went to the spirit world to plead with them as they had started disappearing from the city, she was told that they would not help, as they did not want to get involved with human wars. They also reminded Korra that if she got their help, it would almost be the same as at Kuvira was doing as she was using spirits to fight other humans.

Meanwhile, Bolin (P.J. Byrne), Lin Beifong (Mindy Sterling) and Opal (Alyson Stoner) were surprised to find that Toph Beifong (Philece Sampler) was also planning on busting out Su Beifong (Anne Heche) and her family from Kuvira’s forces. Bolin was star struck at seeing Toph as she was his hero. Toph then informed her daughter, Lin that she had found out that Su had been captured as she kept watch over Zaofu from the swamp via the spirit vines.  To Toph’s surprise, Bolin informed them that they could have been taken to a factory or a reeducation camp that was nearby, and Opal informed Toph that Bolin knew this because he used to work for Kuvira, which made Toph question why Opal had dated him.

At the factory Batar Jr. (Todd Haberkorn)  and Zhu Li (Stephanie Sheh) tested the weapon for the demonstration that was going to happen the next day. However, they had to evacuate the building as the weapon had overloaded. Batar Jr. then discovered that someone had allowed the channeling ring to crack, which had in turn caused the overload. Batar Jr. then told them that they were going to take the entire thing apart to make sure that everything would be ready for the demonstration the next day.

Inside the factory, Bolin, Lin, Opal and Toph hid behind some crates. Lin and Toph told Bolin that it had been 20 years since they had actually seen each other. And Lin informed Toph that she and Su had actually worked out their differences with each other. Both of them, after feeling the floor with their feet, informed them that  Su and her family were in a cavern below, and Lin deduced that they were being held in a suspended prison so that they could not use their powers.

They then had to keep quiet as Kuvira entered. Batar Jr. informed her that there were a few malfunctions, but that everything would be ready by tomorrow. Zhu Li then reassured Kuvira that she was doing everything in her power, but Toph noticed that Zhu Li was lying. Before Kuvira left, she instructed them to tell all the workers and troops to attend the demonstration. Based on this, Bolin suggested that they wait until the next day to attack as that would be the best chance to sneak in and to rescue Su and the others, as the factory would be empty. Toph also refused to do anything about the canon, as she was only there to save her family.

That night, while they camped out, Toph told Bolin that he might actually have some talent as lavabending is a rare ability. Bolin then asked Toph who Lin’s father was, and Toph revealed that he was a nice man, but that things just didn’t really work out between them. Toph then told Lin to stop fuming by the fire and to tell her what exactly what she wanted to say. Lin then lashed out at her mother, as she felt resentful that she had grown up without a father and that Toph had never talked about him until now. She then told her that after she and Su had patched things up with each other, that she had thought about reaching out to her, but now, she realized that it would be better for them not to have any contact with each other.

The next morning, as the demonstration started, which involved blowing up an empty town in front of them, Bolin, Toph and Lin went down to the prison. They then propelled Lin over to the cage where Su and her family were being kept, and Lin swung them over to Bolin using her metal cable. However, the guards came in and noticed what was happening while she was swinging over Batar Sr., who had been screaming. Thankfully, with their combined efforts, Su and Lin managed to get over to where Bolin and Toph were.

Above ground, the canon malfunctioned again as the “distributor pin” had gone missing. After it was revealed that Zhu Li had been sabotaging the canon, Kuvira decided to place in her in the target town so that she would be blown up as well.

Above ground, after they learned what happened to Zhu Li, Bolin told them to go ahead as he could not leave Zhu Li behind, especially as she had been trying to sabotage the weapon the entire time. Opal then decided to go with him; and Su, Lin and Wing and Wei decided to take advantage of the moment to stop Kuvira from firing the weapon.

As the weapon started to warm up, Batar Jr. told them to stop the weapon after seeing that Opal was in the target town with Bolin. Thankfully, the weapon fired at a mountain behind the town as Su and Lin had managed to knock the canon aside.

Kuvira and her forces then fought with Su, Lin, Wing and Wei. They were then rescued by Toph who used her earthbending to knock out the mecha tanks and soldiers surrounding them. She then told Kuvira that she gave metalbenders a bad name and then left with her family on Opal’s sky bison.

As soon as they landed at a nearby forest, Toph apologized for not being a great mother and told Lin and Su that they had turned out to be great. She then asked Lin to find some way not to hate her. Lin agreed and finally forgave her mother for everything. Toph then decided to leave and told them that her fighting days were over. She also told them not to tell Korra that her back was killing her and revealed the reason why she and Katara did not get involved with the Civil War and other battles because it was time to leave it up to the kids.

After she left, Opal thanked Bolin then kissed him on the cheek as she forgave him for what he had done. Zhu Li then told her not to be so hard on him, as his heart was in the right place. She then told them that they had to get to Republic City quickly as she had to warn them that Kuvira was planning to attack in two weeks’ time.
