Everything is awesome indeed. Chris Pratt has finally given an updated about the status of the long-awaited sequel to The LEGO Movie. After the box office success of the 2014 hit, what adventures are waiting for Emmet Brickowski (Chris Pratt) and Wyldstyle (Elizabeth Banks)?
Breaking the Fourth Wall and What’s Next
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s The LEGO Movie was a massive success in 2014. It grossed $469.2 million at the global box office and spawned the equally successful spin-off The LEGO Batman Movie which cashed in $301.3 million worldwide. The LEGO Ninjago Movie is set to be released on Sept. 22. Naturally, a sequel follows.
However, after the surprising third act which saw Pratt’s Emmet end the terror of Lord Business and also break into the real world, what else can the sequel do? While doing press rounds for his new movie Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Pratt teased about the sequel to the animated hit.
“The first movie is a very difficult movie to create a sequel to because, as all the best movies do, it paints itself into a corner,” the actor explained to iO9. “Especially by tearing down the fourth wall in the final act. That’s a major jump, so they’ve got some really awesome ideas on how to deal with that and I can’t wait for people to see it.”
He, however, admitted that he has already done some work for the movie. He also expects to receive the newest draft of the script soon. Pratt will start recording for the movie’s hero Emmett in two weeks.
The LEGO Movie sequel has already been greenlighted at Warner Bros. Mike Mitchell of Shrek Forever After and Trolls has been tapped to direct. Both Lord and Miller (22 Jump Street and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatball) will return to pen the script.
It is difficult to predict what the sequel has in store for fans. To recall, the first movie ended with Emmett (and the viewers) finding out that the LEGO world was created by a businessman (played by Will Ferrell) and the story was created by his son who is secretly playing with the model.
That said, perhaps the sequel will be set in both the real and the LEGO world similar to Pixar’s Toy Story. With how The LEGO Movie ended, anything is possible.
Emmett Sings in Space?
However, Chris McKay of The LEGO Batman movie (who also served as animation producer and editor of The LEGO Movie) that the sequel will have a completely different formula. More excitingly, it is headed to space.
“LEGO 2 is going to be this big musical and space action movie,” he revealed to Shanlian on Batman (via Heroic Hollywood). he also explained that there is a lot of writing involved because not only do they need to submit a script, but also contact songwriters for the music. ” So it was very ambitious to get that movie out,” McKay added.
Given the success of the song Everything is Awesome, making a musical instead of a typical animated movie makes sense. Moreover, over the years, musicals seem to be flourishing. From Frozen to La La Land, it is clear that the audience is hungry for musicals on the big screen.
Not much information is available about The LEGO Movie 2, but aside from Pratt, all the major characters are expected to return. The first movie also starred Alison Brie, Charlie Day, Dave Franco, Jake Johnson, Keegan-Michael Key, Nick Offerman, Liam Neeson and Morgan Freeman.
The LEGO Movie 2 is set to be released on Feb. 8, 2019.
