“The Librarians” Season 1 Episode 4 “And Santa’s Midnight Run” aired on Sunday, Dec. 21, 2014, at 8:00 p.m. on TNT. To Cassandra’s surprise and wonder, Santa is actually real. He also needed their help. Find out what happened in this episode in the recap below.
Someone has kidnapped Santa Claus (guest star Bruce Campbell) in London. Mrs. Claus called Jenkins (John Larroquette) to ask for help or else Christmas would be canceled. The librarians in training — Jake (Christian Kane), Cassandra (Lindy Booth) and Ezekiel (John Kim), would have to find Jolly Old Nick and bring him back to the North Pole.
No one was more thrilled to know that they will be rescuing Santa Claus than Cassandra. At three years old, she was told by her parents that Santa isn’t real. Upon learning the truth from the Jenkins, she has renewed her fondness for the most festive holiday of all. So, together with Jake, Cassandra headed to London to ask witnesses and gather evidence of Santa’s kidnapping.
While there, Jake talked with a guy using rhyming words in a cockney accent about what happened to the real Santa Claus. They learned that Dulaque (Matt Frewer) and his Serpent Brotherhood are responsible.
Meanwhile, Santa woke up to find Dulaque and Lamia (Leslie Ann Brandt) in front of him. The head of the brotherhood declared he would like the powerful magic Santa has collected over the course of the year, and to do this, he would have to kill him.
Back at the Annex, Cassandra told the team that she has met Dulaque before (in the episode “And the Sword and the Stone” air date: Dec. 7, 2014). She did it so she can trace back to where he’s holed at. As soon as they found his place, Eve (Rebecca Romjin) and Jake tried to distract Dulaque, Lamia and their soldiers. They started throwing around precious artifacts from the collection of the brotherhood’s leader. Ezekiel and Cassandra, meanwhile, helped Santa up and untied him. They escaped outside through the chimney.
When Dulaque realized what was happening, Santa was already gone. But it wasn't over. Turned out, he has given Santa a poison. It resulted in his other incarnations emerging. In other words, all the other characters and personalities associated with Santa Claus from different cultures and time periods took over his body, bringing different kinds of challenges for the librarians with him.
From Dulaque’s place, the librarians went their separate ways. Ezekiel wore Santa’s hat as a decoy and somehow its magic brought a good effect of him. He became generous and nice to everyone. Meanwhile, Eve was in charge of making sure that Santa was safely back in the North Pole. But Santa’s sleigh was missing, so Eve took the next best transportation available – a truck, which, unfortunately, lost gas halfway through their journey.
So, the next plan was to assist Eve and Santa, with Jake fetching them from the countryside, while Cassandra and Ezekiel made arrangements for a plane. However, no one knew how to fly an aircraft except for Santa. He did succeed in doing so, but Dulaque caught up to them. A fight took place inside the plane, with Dulaque eventually jumping off the aircraft. But it’s pretty obvious it’s not the last we’ll see of him.
By this time though, Santa was too weak to fly the plane; his magic's almost used up. So, even without any skill and knowledge, Eve had to take the plane’s controls. She also had to take over Santa’s job for Christmas. That is, she’s in charge of spreading the Christmas spirit around the world. She transported all over, touching people who were in pain or in despair, with the spirit of hope and love. This, according to Santa, was the true meaning of Christmas.
Santa chose Eve for this job because, as much as she showed her apathy for the season, Santa said that she actually had the spirit of Christmas close to her heart. She was born on Christmas Eve.
The episode closed with the trainees back in the Anne and there, they celebrated not just Christmas, but also Eve’s birthday.
