CBS is set to do a remake of the Neil Simon classic, “The Odd Couple.” The show will star Matthew Perry (“Friends”) and Thomas Lennon (“Sean Saves the World”), with Perry also involved with writing and producing the multi-camera comedy. Read further to learn about this project.
Perry has been dreaming of doing the remake of “The Odd Couple” for most of his life. In a press statement released in December 2013 when the project was first announced, Perry said that he had been wanting to play Oscar Madison since he was 10 years old.
“To be given the opportunity to develop a modern version of it for CBS has put a permanent smile across my face. I met up with a wonderful writing partner in Danny Jacobson. We both have such a passion for the source material that we have instantly become obsessed with making this great.” said Perry, as published on TV Line, who also said that it should be exciting to work in front of a live audience again. Perry last did a multi-camera sitcom ten years ago on “Friends.” His other projects after that were all single-camera comedy shows.
“The Odd Couple,” which was originally a 1965 Broadway play by Neil Simon, was adapted into television in the 1970s. It ran for five years and starred Tony Randall and Jack Klugman, who played divorced men Oscar Madison and Felix Ungar who share a Manhattan apartment. Oscar is described as sloppy and laid-back, while Felix is neat and uptight. The comedy is drawn from their personality differences.
“The Odd Couple” was also turned into a movie in 1968, bringing legendary comedy icons, Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon, together. The movie was both a critical and an audience success.
For the television remake, which is set to air on CBS in 2015, Perry will be paired with Thomas Lennon, who will play Felix. He was cast in the role last March 2014. This will be the second time Perry and Lennon will be working together after “17 Again” with Zac Effron. Lennon also has a “Friends” connection. He played Joey’s hand twin in one episode.
Last July 18, 2014, during the press panel at the Television Critics Association’s annual event, the actors were present for interviews, making sure to get the word out there that the remake is in full swing.
