It looks like not all of Americans are going to the beach or watching college football during Labor Day weekend. The horror movie The Possession took the top position of the box office Friday with $6.1 million. It could easily earn around $20 million during the holiday weekend.
The Possession stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Kyra Sedgwick. It is the first horror movie to get the top spot on a Labor Day weekend since The Final Destination in 2009.
Lawless earned $2.8 million on Friday and is estimated to earn around $11 million in the four day weekend. It opened last Wednesday and will probably earn around $13 million for its first six days. The movie stars Tom Hardy and Shia LeBeouf. Lawless is a Western set in the Prohibition era. It is written by Nick Cave and directed by John Hillcoat. Hardy’s presence might make more people watch it during the weekend.
Two action flicks take the next two spots on the Box Office chart. There are The Expendables 2 and The Bourne Legacy. The Expendables 2 earned $2.2 million while The Bourne Legacy got $1.8 million. There are no numbers yet for the anti-Obama documentary 2016: Obama’s America, which expanded to 1,750 theaters this weekend. It is expected to earn similar numbers to the action movies. It is made by Dinesh D’Souza and tackles on how Obama spent his life trying to please his late Kenyan father.
Another movie that doesn’t have numbers for Friday is the kiddie movie The Oogieloves in the BIG Balloon Adventure. People are expecting it to break the record for the worst debut for a film that is playing in more than 2,000 theaters. It opened last Wednesday and earned a total of $225,588 for its first two days. It has a per theater average of $47 Wednesday and $57 Thursday.
