The Space Between Us is a story of a young Martian boy who falls in love with a girl on Earth. It seems that his love is similar to what any ordinary human being may experience. This is the highly-relatable aspect of the movie.
Gardner Elliot (Asa Butterfield) is a sixteen-year-old boy whom his mother delivered on Mars. She was an astronaut on a mission to Mars (Red Planet). However, she was pregnant when she went there without the knowledge of her team. The delivery was successful but his mother did not survive the complication of his birth.

According to producer Richard Barton Lewis, he tries to know and understand his persona and his innate earthly being. Gardner cannot deny the fact of his humanity that he is not aware of. After all, he is still human and that will eventually manifest in his character and behavior.
