The ‘Straight Outta Compton’ Update: Watch ‘Muppetz With Attitude’ sing ‘Express yourself’; Kendrick Lamar Interviews N.W.A

As the N.W.A biopic “Straight Outta Compton” dominates the box office, the internet seems to have gone crazy with a collective 1980’s hip-hop nostalgia. The latest in the succession of all things N.W.A is the muppets, who ‘get ill’ with their mashup of the N.W.A song, “Express Yourself.” Watch the video after this break.

The video is published by the muppets mashup channel Animal Robot, and is labelled as M.W.A (standing for, of course, Muppetz Wit Attitude). It is eerie how apt it is to see “Fozzie Bear” do a Dr. Dre. The video also features Kermit the Frog, and Big Bird, and is quite hilarious in its counterpoint of cuddly animals doing ‘gangsta’ lyrics.

“Straight Outta Compton”, which tells the story of the rise of ‘Ni**az Wit Attitude’ in the black neighbourhoods of L.A ravaged by violent crime, racism and police brutality, is currently playing in theaters to rave reviews. The group, consisting of Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, MC Ren, DJ Yella and Eazy-E, are considered one of the most seminal hip-hop outfits of all time. N.W.A is commonly attributed as bringing ‘West coast gangsta rap’ to the fore-front of the world stage with songs like “F*ck The Police.” The  group, as well as the movie has been mired with allegations of racism and violence, but the movie has been highly acclaimed by critics and viewers.

A star-struck Kendrick Lamar recently interviewed the four surviving band members ( Eazy-E passed away in 1995) for the premier of the film. “Straight Outta Compton”, which was also the title of N.W.A’s first album is credited with bringing Compton to the world, “from a safe distance.” Watch the full video, curtesy of
