We all love and adore Samuel. L. Jackson for his portrayal as the mentor of the Avengers and Director of S.H.I.E.L.D Col. Nick Fury. But what if you are told that the actor initially considered for the role of the one eyed veteran turned spy was not Mr. Jackson then? It would come as a surprise to some fans of both the actor and character that he was indeed not the first choice but it was rather George Clooney who was approached to play the character first by the studio.
According to Business Insider, Marvel Studios had approached George Clooney to play the role of Nick Fury, as he was one of their preferred choices to play the character. It is being said that the actor read one of the comic series based on the character, which was titled “Fury” written by Garth Ennis that was in publishing somewhere between 2001 and 2002. After having read the comic book, there was a particular scene that the actor just could not handle and was instrumental in him declining the offer for the role from Marvel.
Sean Howe’s “Marvel Comics: The Untold Story” revealed that because of a scene in the comics where Nick Fury in his battle days kills an enemy soldier in the most gruesome way possible immediately led to George rejecting the offer. In the comic book, Col. Fury presumably in the aftermath of a war comes charging and yelling at an enemy soldier, holds out the intestines of the enemy while pulling it kills him by wrapping the same organ around the neck and does not leave until the enemy is dead.
The scene has been described as one of the most gruesome scenes in the comic world and perhaps Col. Fury’s darkest secrets that made him the man he is today. As Tony Stark rightfully mentioned in “The Avengers” that Fury is a spy and will definitely have secrets, secrets that he wouldn’t want others to know, this is certainly one of those incidents that the character wouldn’t want anyone to know. But in the end, the character was completely refined and turned into the current version, which proved to be a definite success amongst fans.
