Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has shut down comparisons between James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy and Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok. In a new interview, the studio boss talks about the third installment to the story of the God of Thunder.
Comedies in Space
The first trailer for Thor: Ragnarok has gone viral. Instead of the usual dark and mythological style of the previous two movies, the new installment looks like an action-comedy-adventure from the ’80s thanks to the bright pops of color and the catchy pop song.
While those factors contributed to why the trailer became a massive hit, it also drew comparisons to Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy. However, Feige insists that Waititi’s take on the story of Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Asgard is very unique and nothing like any movie from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“Well, I think I would say it’s, and as people see more of Ragnarok, it’s a Taika tone more than a Guardians tone,” Feige told Heroic Hollywood. “He’s really adding a very unique point of view to it, but certainly the success of Guardians just boosted our confidence to continue to go in new, fun, weird directions.”
The comparisons between Thor: Ragnarok and Guardians of the Galaxy are not exactly unfounded. Waititi’s new movie does have a few elements that are similar to the universe imagined by Gunn. The color palette alone is reminiscent of Gunn’s space superhero movie.
However, as Feige pointed out, Guardians of the Galaxy was not the formula, but the movie allowed the studio to take more bold choices. Gunn’s work led to the creation of Doctor Strange, Ant-Man and even Avengers: Infinity War.
Waititi, whose previous works include What We Do In The Shadows and Hunt for the Wilderpeople, was the perfect choice for Thor 3. The movie’s marketing stunts have been widely successful. Last year’s Team Thor shorts have also gone viral thanks to the director’s signature wit and humor which are apparent in the videos. Despite disappointing reviews of Thor: The Dark World, Thor: Ragnarok remains to be one of the most anticipated movies of the year.
One thing is certain about the upcoming movie: it is going to be funnier than its predecessor. Cast members including Tom Hiddleston and Idris Elba have both spoken about the more humorous tone of the third Thor movie.
Introducing A New Character
In other news, Waititi has revealed his other role in the upcoming movie. The filmmaker will not only direct but star alongside Hemsworth and Ruffalo as Korg, a Kronan (a rock beast).
He initially wanted to cast Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson for the role, but he joked that there was not enough chicken and salmon in New Zealand to sustain the former wrestler and Hemsworth while filming. So, instead, he cast himself to do the motion capture, reported Vanity Fair.
Korg was already introduced in Thor: The Dark World, but his appearance was cut short when he crumbled after receiving an uppercut. In Thor: Ragnarok, he will be friends with the God of Thunder and guide the Asgardian through the life under the Grandmaster’s (Jeff Goldblum) rule.
Waititi also revealed that another character from the comics called Miek will also be introduced in the upcoming movie. He, Korg and Thor will be fighters in the gladiator-like duels hosted by the Grandmaster.
Thor: Ragnarok also stars Tessa Thompson, Idris Elba, Karl Urban, Benedict Cumberbatch and Anthony Hopkins. It will see the mighty Avenger in a gladiatorial battle that pits him against his “friend from work” the Hulk. His quest is to survive and head back home to save Asgard from the impending Ragnarok. The movie will hit theaters worldwide on Nov. 3.
