The story of “Legends” is based on a novel by Robert Littell and centers on Martin Odum (Bean), who is part of a group of FBI operatives for the Deep Cover Operations unit of the agency and works alongside Crystal McGuire (Larter). In going deep undercover, Odum develops the ability to create different personalities and realities for himself. These personalities are called “legends” in the trade. But when he encounters a stranger who lets him question who Martin Odum really is, he starts to have doubts about his own realities.
“Legends has everything you want in a good spy drama: intriguing characters, multi-layered plots, a terrific cast and lots of action and suspense,” remarked Michael Wright, president and programming head of TNT, in a press release published on The Wrap.
The show is produced and written by Howard Gordon, who created the series “Homeland.” David Semel serves as the director of the pilot episode, which has been described as gritty and highly stylized.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the role of Martin Odum was supposed to be played by Brendan Fraser, in what would have been his first regular series debut. But the actor left the project before production became full swing.
Meanwhile, in promoting the series, TNT made use of the hashtag #DontKillSeanBean in distributing promo items, as well as setting up banners and billboards for “Legends.” The tag is an acknowledgement and a nod to all the other characters Bean has played in his past films and television shows, such as Ned Stark in “Game of Thrones” and Boromir in “The Lord of the Rings,” where the characters met their untimely deaths.
The Telegraph reported that Bean was amused by the marketing campaign. TNT assured viewers and fans of the actor that his character on “Legends” will not end up dying, at least pending ratings and feedback once the show airs.
