“Togetherness” Season 1 Episode 8 “Not So Together” aired on Sunday, March 8, 2015, at 9:30 p.m. on HBO. Tina moves out, Alex gets good news about a job and Brett is left to take care of their kids while Michelle goes on a trip. Sounds like nothing is out of the ordinary, right? Not quite so. Find out what happened in this season finale in the recap below.
It is Tina’s (Amanda Peet) last night at the Pearson’s and after sharing a meal with everyone for one last time, she bids goodbye to Alex (Steve Zissis). As soon as Tina leaves, he tells Brett (Mark Duplass) that he’s considering going back to Detroit, perhaps to teach or work at the family restaurant.
In the front yard, Tina says her goodbye to her sister. But she informs her of her concern about Michelle (Melanie Lynskey) going on this trip with her friend David (John Ortiz). The sisters lightly argue for a while, but Tina actually tells Michelle that she thinks it’s cool that she’s doing something with this charter school, even if it’s with David. At dawn, Michelle wakes up Brett as she’s set to leave for her trip. They’ll see each other the next night.
Alex gets a call about a job and proudly tells Brett about it. It’s the third leading role in a movie, so it is a big deal. He’s going to be in New Orleans for the filming. He leaves a voice mail for Tina and wonders if they can talk face-to-face before he flies out.
Michelle is with her group on the road and someone starts karaoke. David is sitting behind her as she’s driving and he smiles at her in the rearview mirror. Meanwhile, Brett is in charge of the kids while Michelle is gone, and it’s not the easiest task. The youngest is crying in the car, while the eldest is throwing a tantrum as she doesn’t want to go to school. So, they head to the beach and Brett invites Alex, who’s got a few things to take care of first.
He visits Larry (Peter Gallagher) and Tina’s house place with flowers in hand, only to find that the two are not at home. They’re in a hotel in Santa Monica. Alex bikes his way to get to them and loses the flowers in the process, except for one stem with blue blooms. Reaching the hotel, he spots the couple getting a massage. Can he speak to Tina for a while?
He thanks her for everything she has done for him and gives the flower. Then in a bold move, he invites Tina to come to New Orleans with him. What is he doing? He says he’s going to take care of her. He has too. He knows she doesn’t love Larry. Tina thinks he’s out of his mind and rudely asks him to leave. “It’s better this way,” she said.
Alex walks to the beach, looking lost and depressed because of the rejection. He gets a text from Brett, who’s actually on the same beach as him. Brett waves and Alex, for a moment, smiles.
At the charter school hearing, David is having a hard time stating their case, so Michelle steps up and claims she’s the head of this project. She states her credentials to the panel and demonstrates her passion for this cause. David is impressed and it looks like the panel is, too. Later, the group has drinks at the bar and they cheer for Michelle. Here’s hoping something good come out of it.
That night, David walks Michelle to her hotel room. He musters up the courage to tell her he’s inspired by her, but he does respect her marriage and their working relationship. He cannot deny that they have this energy. Michelle is flattered by his nice words and admits she feels the energy. But they cannot do anything about it.
Brett drives Alex to the airport and reminds him that he will be at this very same spot to pick his friend up after a month. Meanwhile, how is Brett today, by the way? He tells Alex that spending the day at the beach gave him renewed spirit. He’s excited about Michelle returning home. Alex suggests he has to show this positive side of him to his wife more often. Brett gets a brilliant idea — why not drive to Michelle? He leaves the kids with the babysitter and heads off.
But then Michelle is exchanging notes behind the adjoining hotel doors with David and as the energy rises, the two can no longer hold it together. Michelle opens the door and they kiss. Uh-oh. What is she doing?
