Togetherness Recap: Handcuffs [WATCH VIDEO]
Actor, writer and film producer Mark Duplass at “Humpday” premiere, 2009.

Togetherness” Season 1 Episode 2 “Handcuffs” aired on Sunday, Jan. 18, 2015, at 9:30 p.m. on HBO. The Piersons go through the same boring motions in their lives. Except for the sex play, nothing else really exciting happens, which perhaps sums up what being married for a long time is like. Read on for the recap.

The short window that Michelle (Melanie Lynskey) gets while dressing up is all the time she has to herself, and over brunch, she complains to her sister Tina (Amanda Peet), who’s been picking off food on Michelle’s plate, that she’s tired of people barging in on her or being all over her, like Brett (Mark Duplass), her kids and even Tina. Tina thinks her sister seriously needs to get laid. It was even that is met with complaints from Michelle. Sex with her husband is so routine, just like every day of her life is so predictable.

Tina asks her about sexual fantasies, and Michelle opens up that she would like to have crazy, spontaneous sex with the rigid Brett. She would like to beat him up with sex, if that’s possible. Tina encourages Michelle to do it and offers to take the kids out that night so her sister could have her time with her husband.

Brett, at this moment, is at work. It’s established that he works as a sound editor in Hollywood, and today, he is putting sound and music on a crime drama. The director isn’t happy with the sound of a coyote that Brett just added to the film, and they get into an argument. Brett explains how he’s going for authenticity, but the director has the last say, so what can he do?

The girls return to the Pierson’s house. They find Alex (Steve Zissis) still snoring on the couch. Tina attempts to wake him up, and Michelle starts cleaning up after him. It irks her sister, and she suggests kicking Alex out as he’s bugging her. Tina spills a glass of freezing cold water on Alex, which made him scream wide awake. Could he get up and help her with her party planning business? Alex didn’t want to budge, but Tina offers to show him her boobs. Michelle is appalled, but what the heck, she knows her sister’s crazy antics.

One of Brett’s co-worker talks to him about not arguing with the directors anymore, but Brett tries to reason with him. He’s also told that he doesn’t have to come to the sound stage for the second half of their work. He can stay in the sound booth for the rest of the day.

What follows is a montage of Brett and Michelle getting on with their day. Again, it’s all about routine.

That night, as planned, Tina leaves her sister alone in her house. He brings Alex and the children to the local pizza joint. While babysitting, Tina talks with Alex about improving his looks, given that he’s auditioning for roles, and he’s a bit offended. What’s the matter with his looks? She offers to “train” Alex to become the next Brad Pitt. He started with throwing the pizza he just ordered in the trash.

Meanwhile, Brett comes home to the surprise his wife prepares for him. Does he notice anything? She tells him that they’re going to try something different tonight and takes control of the situation. Brett is hesitant, at first, but goes along with the nice surprise.

In the bedroom, Michelle orders her husband to undress, but he’s not allowed to touch her yet. He still doesn’t understand what is going on but follows his wife’s command. He shows his discomfort by asking all sorts of question, complaining about the chill and even wondering if he could eat a banana, but Michelle is still in control. When she pulls out a handcuff, he laughs nervously.

Michelle slaps his butt cheeks, and he freaks out. She spanks him a couple more times, and they start getting in the mood. But by some accident, Michelle spanks Brett where it really hurts — his balls. The sex play is done. The mood is over. Tonight isn’t going to happen, as Michelle hurries to get ice. But there’s no ice in the freezer; Brett forgot to fix this!

That night, Michelle and Brett end up watching television in the sofa, sitting far away from each other. Too bad, Piersons!
