Togetherness Recap: Insanity
Actor, writer and film producer Mark Duplass at “Humpday” premiere, 2009.

Togetherness” Season 1 Episode 3 “Insanity” aired on Sunday, Jan. 25, 2015, at 9:30 p.m. on HBO. It’s the premiere party for Brett’s movie, but his wife Michelle spends the night by herself. Meanwhile, Tina and Alex gets close to a producer. Find out what happened in this episode.

Tina (Amanda Peet) and Alex (Steve Zissis) are working out together in the Pierson’s living room. She’s really keen on transforming Alex’s physique, so he could get better chances at his auditions. The workout is insanity and Alex is already crying out from the pain and exhaustion. But Tina tells him she’s proud of her friend as he didn’t quit.

Meanwhile, Brett (Mark Duplass) and Michelle (Melanie Lynskey) are discussing private school applications for their daughter when Tina interrupts them to say that the tickets to Brett’s movie premiere are here. Brett says he’d only like to stay home and chill, and Michelle calls on him for being grumpy. Tina, however, insists that they all go. Even with only two tickets, she will be able to find a way to get in.

As they dress up, Michelle gets a text from the babysitter who says she might not be able to come. Once again, Brett would like to bail on them, but since it’s his night, Michelle offers to watch the children and stay home. Tina still would like to go to this Hollywood event and says this will be a chance for Alex to rub elbows with the bigwigs.

Minutes after the three left, Michelle settles at home by giving the kids a bath when the babysitter arrives. Apparently, she’s able to get her shift covered, so Michelle dresses up to follow Brett, Alex and Tina at the premiere. Only, she doesn’t go there and instead goes to a bar, relishing in being all by herself. She hasn’t done this in a long time.

They are checking tickets at the entrance of the premiere and Tina is not at all worried that they would be rejected. She suggests that all they have to do is for Alex to pretend he’s part of the movie, with Tina as his manager. Meanwhile, Brett remains in line as he has the actual ticket.

Tina and Alex crash the party with success. He actually can’t believe that they were able to get in. He thinks Tina is insane, but everything she has done for him so far seems to be working to his advantage.

Alex spots Larry (guest star Peter Gallagher), a producer for the movie, and he tells Tina he looks intimidating in person. Tina encourages him to walk up to the guy and engage him in a conversation. But Alex winds up stalking Larry, and they end up in the bathroom together. As Larry is taking a dump, Alex assists him with the toilet paper and chats him up about it. It’s so odd and awkward. Larry asks to give him some privacy.

Meanwhile, Brett attempts to make up with the movie director for their minor rift in the last episode (“Handcuffs” air date: Jan. 18, 2015). He introduces himself, as the director can’t seem to remember working with him, and then he also tells him that he would like to clear the air once and for all. He hopes they can work together again. The director shouts at him to leave, but then takes it back by saying he’s only kidding. What a crazy encounter!

Brett sends a text to his wife, who tells him that she’s about to go to bed. Only, she’s really not. She’s still out on the prowl, bumming a smoke from young kids hanging outside a convenience store. They think she’s hot.

Michelle ends up in the town hall, where a meeting about public schools is being held. After the meeting, she talks to the guy in charge about it, as she is passionately interested about having a good school for her kids. The guy, a divorcee, brings her home, and it looks like they have a connection. Later that night, Michelle googles for David Garcia, the guy she just met.

Brett leaves the party and finds a bird on the stoplight, in the noisy streets of Los Angeles. He captures the sound of it on his iPhone, like the soundman that he is.

Back at the premiere party, Alex sees that Larry is walking towards him, and he tries to hide. But Larry actually catches him and asks if he wants to tell him something, as he finds Alex behavior so weird. Alex admits that he loves all of his movies. Realizing that his “stalker” isn’t actually a bad guy, he invites Alex and Tina to spend the rest of the evening with him. They had fun for the rest of the night.

Alex and Tina cannot believe their luck about partying with Larry, the Hollywood bigwig, and it’s in this moment that Alex realizes he feels something for his friend. Tina is something else. Could he be in love with her?

But then, he sees Tina is getting really cozy with Larry, and it’s clear, he has no chances. He leaves the party with Brett, who wonders if he’s alright. Alex tells him that he didn’t realize what was happening to him and Tina. He’s embarrassed by this. But Brett parks the car to tell his friend that he never needs to be embarrassed about anything and compares his situation to the song playing in the car.

The episode ends as Brett and Alex jam to the music.
