Actor, writer and film producer Mark Duplass at “Humpday” premiere, 2009.

Togetherness” Season 1 Episode 5 “Kick the Can” aired on Sunday, Feb. 16, 2015, at 9:30 p.m. on HBO. Michelle and her friends challenge a group of youngsters in a game at the park. But the events highlight what’s possibly wrong in her marriage. Find out what happened in the episode in the recap below.

As they agreed to go to couple’s therapy in the last episode (“Houston, We Have a Problem” air date: Feb. 8, 2015), Michelle (Melanie Lynskey) and Brett (Mark Duplass) finished their first session feeling really bad about everything. It was World War III emotional bombing in there. How can they keep doing this every weekend?

Michelle suggests that they just “follow their bliss” after every couple’s therapy session to release all that tension. Brett is thinking along the lines of relaxing with a good book at Barnes & Noble. She’s hoping, however if they could do something together. So, Michelle comes up with an amazing idea: play kickball without the kids. All in the name of fun!

Meanwhile, Alex (Steve Zissis) is at a kid’s birthday party when he gets a call from Brett. He instructs him to buy the ball and beer while Brett takes care of getting in the zone. He’s still not psyched about the game, but Michelle is already waiting for him and their friends. However, there’s a problem. A group of people takes their area at the park. Apparently, there’s a birthday party happening and the group has “reserved” the field awhile back. Michelle tries to negotiate, but the other group doesn’t give in.

Tina (Amanda Peet) is walking towards the park with her boyfriend Larry (Peter Gallagher). She spots and approaches Brett as he’s listening to music in his parked car. What’s going on? He needs a second to get ready, is there a problem? Tina tells him to not become a mood killer. Don’t ruin it for her sister, Brett! Meanwhile, Alex arrives with the stuff Brett asked. Then, they immediately chug one can of beer before heading to the field.

Because the other group still wouldn’t leave the park, Larry offers them free movie passes, Jamba Juice, and Starbucks gift cards. He did it in exchange of using the field instead but the hipsters still wouldn’t give it up. Larry offers them $500? The group asks them to clear the bleachers instead, and maybe, go away too. No matter how they negotiate with the other group, the answer is still no.

At this point, a determined Michelle challenges the other group to play with them since no one is leaving. So, it’s youngsters vs. old people then. But first, they all chug a beer and set the rules. Instead of kickball though, they were going to play “Kick the Can.” So, the game is on!

Alex and Tina run and hide out against the other players. She takes this chance to talk to Alex about how he behaved when Larry was offering the kids money. She points out that Alex undermined Larry that time, when he should be getting from Larry’s good side. He wants to be in his movies, right? Alex said he likes Larry and he’s not jealous of his closeness with Tina. But he admits, he’s creepy with his dog.

Brett and Michelle find where Alex and Tina are hiding. They see that some of the members of their group are dropping like flies against the hipsters in the game. Alex and Tina leave the hiding place, giving Brett and Michelle some time alone. Brett compliments his wife for being amazing with dealing with the other group and still having all the energy after being drained from that therapy session. Brett admits he’s just faking it. He feels terrible, but he’s trying to get into the spirit. Michelle starts feeling hurt that Brett has to “try” to have fun with his wife and friends. They argue some more, but Brett gives up and turns himself in to the kids.

Alex and Tina, on the other hand, are still having fun in the game. They hide out in one of the closets in the room near the park. It’s quite dark and tight that Alex could not help but smell her. He ends up kissing her passionately. But Tina slaps him and Alex feels ashamed for what he’s done. At the dugout, Alex confessed to Brett that he tried to make out with Tina. On the other hand, Brett said that he lost the game by giving himself up.

Back at the field, the old people are really losing it to the young ones. But they still have Michelle left. Where is she? She’s still hiding from that same place where Brett last left her. She spots a friend who is out in the park playing basketball. She motions him to quietly come to her and explains her situation. She wants to win this game against the young kids. Can he help? He willingly agrees and for a moment, Michelle is probably thinking that this should be something she and Brett are supposed to be doing together. But you know what, she’s having some fun with her friend and they’re thinking of a distraction. Forget about Brett!

The distraction, it turns out, is to turn the sprinklers on the field so that the hipsters leave the can alone. When her friend did this, Michelle comes running out of nowhere, to take the can in the middle of the field. Tina sees what’s coming and helps her sister out. She blocks the hipsters that have already spotted her. Alex did the same too and Michelle was able to kick the can. In the end, they won!

Brett is smiling at the dugout, proud of his wife, but he’s still hesitant to come to her. Meanwhile, Michelle is all smiles and then glances at her friend, nodding and thanking him. Brett notices this and wonders — what just happened and why is his wife looking at that other guy?
