Togetherness Recap: Party Time
Actor, writer and film producer Mark Duplass at “Humpday” premiere, 2009.

Togetherness” Season 1 Episode 7 “Party Time” aired on Sunday, March 1, 2015 at 9:30 p.m. on HBO. Brett gets high and ruins his wife’s party while Tina makes a life-altering decision. Find out what happened in the episode in the recap below.

There’s a party at the Pearson’s house and Michelle (Melanie Lynskey) and Brett (Mark Duplass) are set with all the preparations. But at the last minute, Brett tells his wife he’d leave for a while and only come back when the party is over. He wants to go to a gathering at Linda’s (guest star Mary Steenburgen) whom he met last week (in the episode “Ghost in Chains” air date: Feb. 22, 2015). Brett tells Michelle to think of Linda as similar to her friend David. They got along really well. It was because they are both pushing for this school charter, which is what the party is for. They can go their own way once in a while, right?

Meanwhile, Tina (Amanda Peet) arrives to help her sister with the party. She brought a bouncy castle. Michelle suggests she asks Alex’s (Steve Zissis) help to set this up. But because of their big argument the last time, the two have been ignoring each other. Michelle calls their antics childish.

Brett is at Linda’s house and finds so many other people there. It looks like a fraternity/sorority. He’s greeted by a guy named Scott who confirms that this is Linda’s place. Her dad left her the mansion, but she usually comes and goes. She allows people to crash around though. Scott offers him “mushrooms” and beer.

Back at the Pearson’s, the bouncy castle is still not set up and Tina is struggling with it. Meanwhile, Michelle asks Alex if he notices anything about Brett. It was because he’s been acting really different. Will he keep an eye out for his friend? David (John Ortiz) arrives at the party and Michelle’s face lits up. She rushes to greet him. He brought his daughters with him and Michelle engages them in a conversation. Alex notices something about Michelle and David.

David asks for Brett and she makes an excuse to him. Then, he quickly confesses that Brett bailed on her. She opens up to him about her marriage and then apologizes for it. It’s just that David is so easy to talk to.

Linda and Brett are sitting at her tent. He begins to open up about being told not be weird when he was growing up, and here they are, surrounded by a bunch of weirdoes. He’s feeling amazing and jealous at the same time. Next, Linda shows him her horse at the stables, and once again, Brett is amazed at the calmness of the horse. Linda tells him that it’s because the horse doesn’t have to be anything but who he is, he starts getting emotional. He tells her she is one of his favorite people.

The bouncy castle is still down and Michelle becomes concerned it’s ruining the fund-raiser. She asks Tina to pack it up. Meanwhile, as Alex watches Tina, he gets a video call from Brett on his cell phone. He sees him running and vomiting on the phone.

Linda finds Brett taking a shower outdoor with clothes on. He’s feeling lost; he wants to scream. Linda comes closer to him. They scream together, then they laugh.

Alex picks up Brett at Linda’s even though he doesn’t want to leave. He’s talking crazy, so Alex advises him to just go to his room and take a nap. But no…Brett walks to his wife’s party in his bathrobe and talks to David. He asks if they are “good.” He tells him that Michelle is inspired by him and he feels threatened.

The bouncy castle is essentially dead and Tina is freaking out at her boyfriend. She rants and cries, but Larry (Peter Gallagher) tells her that he understands why she’s dead set on setting it up. But if she’s ready for help from someone, all she has to do is call out and he will be there.

Michelle brings Brett inside to demand why he’s dressed like Obi Wan. He admits he took mushrooms at Linda’s. Michelle is pissed. Brett calmly tells her she seemed unhappy with his presence. He also believes they’re not good for each other at this point. Can they just do their separate ways for today? He goes back to their room and Michelle is just standing there with a really sad look on her face.

Outside, Tina is ready to throw the bouncy castle in the trash and Alex finally approaches her. Does she need help? She caves in and nods. He drives Tina and the bouncy castle to a junk shop. She tells her friend that Larry asks her to move in with him, which explains why she’s freaking out. What is she going to do? Does she love Larry? After a hug from Alex and after realizing someone is willing to take care of her, she decides that she’s going for it and moving in.
