Tom Cruise seemingly wants to leave the Church of Scientology to reconnect with daughter Suri, but things are not going to be so simple for the 52-year-old star. And according to an ex-Scientologist, the repercussions would be massive. Read on to find out more.
After Tom Cruise’s divorce with wife Katie Holmes and the latter’s exit from the church, both her and their daughter Suri Holmes have apparently been labelled as “Suppressive Persons” or “Potential Troubled Source” by the church. Since then, Cruise has been largely absent from his 9-year-old daughter’s life, and according to this HollywoodLife.com report, has not seen her in two years, because of disapproval from the church.
But the actor is looking to reconnect with his daughter, and perhaps going as far as quit the ‘Church of Scientology.’ The two met recently for a playdate, and Cruise is apparently buying a house in New York to remain close to her.
But leaving Scientology is never a simple thing, and the cult has gone as far as trying to have ex-members committed to mental institutes, to prevent them from criticizing the inner workings of the religion. They called it Operation Freakout, and did it to journalist Paulette Cooper in 1970’s.
HollywoodLife.com recently spoke to former Scientologist Chris Shelton about this and he said,”For anyone who leaves the church of Scientology, there would be massive consequences… Tom has been part of the church since the 1980’s… If he left the church, he would have to ‘disconnect’ from the rest of his family who are in the church. That includes his older children, too.”
Sources suggest that Cruise’s career has been more harmed than helped by his association to the Church of Scientology, so the actor might really be leaving for good this time.
