Based on a true story, the story is about a cult leader who was in the FBI’s most wanted list. Read on for more news about “Outlaw Prophet: Warren Jeffs.”
“Outlaw Prophet: Warren Jeffs” was originally a book written by Stephen Singular, a New York Times bestselling author. Adapted into the TV show, the story chronicles the Mormon fundamentalist’s rise to become a leader of his cult, his downfall and his life in prison.
The TV movie begins with Warren Jeffs (Goldwyn) marrying all of the wives of his recently departed father Rulon Jeffs (Martin Landau) and imposing demands on them that are ruthless and wicked, including forced marriages with underage women.
Jeffs was supposed to be prosecuted because of this but fled the authorities for a year. The FBI led a manhunt to apprehend him so that he can face trial, and he was profiled in their “Top 10 Most Wanted List.” When he finally landed in jail, two women testified against him, bolstering the case of the FBI and the prosecution. He was sentenced to life imprisonment on Aug. 9, 2011 for two counts of sexual assault on a minor.
The TV movie also gives viewers a look into the life of Jeffs in prison, where he still claims that he is God’s chosen and that he has a number of followers among the inmates.
Speaking with TV Guide, Goldwyn said that playing the role of Warren Jeffs — a known rapist, polygamist and misogynist — wasn’t on his bucket list, but the script for the TV movie wasn’t easy to pass up.
“We had no intention of making him likable — he does horrible things. But if I don’t try to humanize a character, then I haven’t done my job,” said Goldwyn, describing the process on how he takes challenging roles like this in the TV Guide report.
And that’s what we have for the “Outlaw Prophet: Warren Jeffs.” It will have an encore presentation on July 4–5, 2014 on Lifetime.
