This year started with yet another string of hit movies. These are the movies that thundered at the box office and struck the right chord with fans. From superhero to action, from fantasy to child-friendly, every genre gave one massive hit at the box office.
Logan is undoubtedly one of the best movies made this year. This was Hugh Jackman’s final portrayal of Wolverine. He made this character iconic after having played it for more than a decade.
The actor himself was emotional but remained confident that he would give fans one final mega-successful Wolverine movie. Promotions for the movie were in full swing and it was the trailer that determined the movie was going to be a huge hit.
On Rotten Tomatoes, Logan has a score of 92% while IMDb has given it 8.4 out of 10. With Logan introducing Wolverine’s daughter Laura, his legacy will remain alive in the XCU.
Fate of the Furious
The eighth installment in the Fast & Furious franchise saw Dom going up against his own family.
Old foes became friends as Deckard Shaw joined the crew in order to help take Dom down. The movie had some incredible car chase scenes, emotional moments and much like how Vin Diesel promised this one blew fans’ minds.
It recently crossed the billion-dollar mark at the box office mimicking the success Furious 7 had at the box office. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a score of 66% and IMDb has given it 7.3 out of 10.
Kong: Skull Island
The reboot of the King Kong franchise, the monstrous gorilla was seen in a whole new light in the movie. Starring Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson, the movie re-told the story of an iconic character.
Because of the advancement in technology, the makers were able to create a scenario where a bunch of monsters lives on a secluded island.
CGI was really good in the movie and so were the fight scenes. As for the human characters they had a connection with the massive monster. His story was told in a way that connects him to another monster in the same universe.
Reports have confirmed that Kong will be clashing with Godzilla in 2020. Looking at the movie’s performance, Rotten Tomatoes gave it a score of 78% and IMDb has given it 7.0 out of 10.
The LEGO Batman Movie
If Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice did not appeal to many critics, the Dark Knight’s Lego version was a hit. The movie was originally a spin-off and focused more on Batman’s life in the Lego universe.
Will Arnett reprised the role of Batman and The Hangover star Zach Galifiniakis portrayed the Joker. By adding Robin and Batgirl to the mix, Chris McKay hit jackpot as the movie scored 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb gave it a score of 7.6.
Following the success of this movie, McKay has been asked to helm the solo Nightwing movie in DCEU.
Beauty and the Beast
Starring Emma Watson in the lead role, Beauty and the Beast brought a magical tale to life in the live-action version. Apart from Watson’s role, many praised Luke Evans’ role as Gaston.
Another movie that billion-dollar mark, which in a way does justice to its massive budget of $160 million.
WhatCulture reported that if Watson’s auto-tuned singing is left out, the movie is a wonderful attempt to adapt a tale in a new medium. It also mentioned that Evans’ role as Gaston was the show-stealer.
With many big budget movies lined up to release this year, it remains to be seen which other movies end up scoring big at the box office.
