In the remake of Total Recall, Earth is devastated by chemical warfare and leaves it with two populated areas connected by a tunnel through its core. The Fall is an imperial metropolis that exploits the Colony. The premise of the movie consists of economic and political allegory.
But despite the good premise, director Len Wiseman and writers Kurt Wimmer and Mark Bomback, opts for a lot of noise and less logic. It features lots of chases, fights and shouting. They disregarded action film effectiveness and narrative coherence. A lot of information is given to the audiences in a pace that they can’t enjoy any of it.
Colin Farrell plays Douglas Quaid, a proletarian from the Colony who commutes via the Fall to his work in the factory. His wife is played by Kate Beckinsale. In the original total recall, the Quaids are played by Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sharon Stone.
Arnold Schwarzenegger might be said to be just an action star and Colin Farrell is one of the best actors around, but people remember Schwarzenegger’s line “Consider that a divorce” when he shot Stone in the head. On the other hand, those who already watched the new Total Recall can’t remember a single line that Farrell has said. All they can recall is that Farrell is running away from Beckinsale, sometimes with Jessica Biel by his side.
Quaid is chased by the bad guys because he is not the ordinary factory worker he thinks he is but an agent caught in the middle of battle between the authoritarian Chancellor Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston) and the resistance.
The original Total Recall is not considered a great movie but it was enjoyed by most people who saw it. People are still wondering why the studio approved of an update. Total Recall is a sci-fi movie about a guy chased around with two ladies in black suit.
