Messing with Natalie Portman has always been a bad idea on-screen, because she’s friends with Thor, Darth Vader and V (not to mention Jean Reno’s “Leon the Professional”, who we strongly believe, can take on all three of them). But who does she go to when her husband is dying, and a malicious gang of outlaws led by the malevolent Ewan McGregor is out to get her?
She goes to a shotgun, apparently, in the first trailer for Portman’s western action-drama, “Jane Got a Gun” (No relation to the Aerosmith song “Janie’s Got a Gun”, although the coincidence is quite staggering).
She has some help, from gunslinger and ex-fiance Dan Frost, portrayed to the hilt by Aussie actor Joel Edgerton, (“Zero Dark Thirty”, “Exodus”) who teaches her how to shoot and offers sarcastic comments about their failed romance. Noah Emmerich portrays Jane’s husband Bill “Ham” Hammond, who is himself an outlaw with a bounty on his head, further complicating things for poor Frost.
But Portman displays her usual brilliance in the trailer, as she shoots people indiscriminately and apparent pleasure. Explosions happen, people die and treachery is imminent as Portman defends her prairie home against the outlaws. At some point in the film her daughter is kidnapped, and you can be sure that it does not go well for the guilty party.
“Jane’s Got a Gun”has been plagued with production troubles, with more actors coming and departing the project than a suburban airport, Screen Crush is reporting (and that includes Bradley Cooper, Jude Law and Michael Fassbender). The original studio Relativity Media filed for bankruptcy and the film was saved by the timely intervention of the Weinstein company.
Here is the official logline, via wikipedia:
Jane Hammond (Natalie Portman) has built a new life with her husband Bill “Ham” Hammond (Noah Emmerich) after being tormented by the Bishop Boys gang. She finds herself in the gang’s crosshairs once again when Ham stumbles home riddled with bullets after dueling with the Boys and their relentless leader, Colin (Ewan McGregor). With the vengeful crew hot on Ham’s trail, Jane has nowhere to turn but to her former fiancé Dan Frost (Joel Edgerton) for help in defending her family against certain death. Haunted by old memories, Jane’s past meets the present in a heart-stopping battle for survival.
The movie will be out in US theaters on January 29, 2017.
