“Transparent” Season 1 Episode 2 “The Letting Go” is now available for streaming at Amazon Prime. Maura was on the hardest part of her transition: coming out as a transgender to her children. Meanwhile, Sarah and Tammy got more seriously involved, Ali became closer to her trainer and Josh had a life-altering issue to deal with. Read on for more of our recap of this episode below.
The episode picked up in the last scene from the “Pilot,” where Maura (Jeffrey Tambor) found her eldest daughter Sarah (Amy Landecker) kissing her former lesbian lover Tammy (Melora Hardin) in Maura’s bedroom. But it was Sarah who was more surprised to see her father made up like a woman. Maura had no choice, so she told the truth about her transition to Sarah.
Sarah: Are you saying, like, you’re going to start dressing up like a lady all the time?
Maura: No, all my life I’ve been dressing up as a man. This is me.
The scene cut to the 1980s, and Mort (Maura), a professor, was in his office. He was looking at a lovely silk tunic top with such longing, only to be interrupted by a knock on the door, which was like a knock on his senses. Mort made the conscious decision to go on with his life as a husband and a father, and so he threw the tunic into the trash bin.
Meanwhile, Josh (Jay Duplass) found out that his young girlfriend, Kaya, from the band Glitterish, was thinking of getting an abortion. Yup, she’s pregnant with his baby. While he tried to be sympathetic about this unwanted pregnancy, he contemplated on whether or not he was ready for this. After spending some time with Sarah’s kids, Josh decided to propose to Kaya with a ring that was his great aunt’s. It had history. His great aunt died in the Holocaust, apparently. Kaya reacted by saying, “Ewwww.”
Ali (Gaby Hoffman) and her trainer got it on pretty well. She was hanging out with him a lot, having pot smoking sessions with him and his roommate. She and the guy were also having a lot of sex, which she considered would be the best workout. Ali has forgotten that just days before, she had this grand plan of writing a book.
Sarah has started sneaking out of her house to meet up with Tammy. They both confessed that they were in a dry spell with their marriages. The two ended up having hot sex in Sarah’s car at a lookout point. It was like old times, and this would be one of Sarah’s most liberating sexual encounters yet since her marriage. Later, when her husband Len saw the car seat, he wondered why it was so soaked. Sarah, by the way, only told Len about her father, who wasn’t all that surprised. Len thought he was creepy from the beginning.
At the LGBT center, Maura shared that her coming out to Sarah was quite unexpected and “tragically impromptu.” But she had taken the first step with one of her children and it made her feel good. Later, Maura was hanging out in one of her new friend’s place, who warned her that coming out to family would be rough. She knew what she was talking about when she came out five years ago.
A siren was heard throughout the complex, and they were told that one of the old lady had died. This made her apartment available to the next tenant, and right there, Maura knew she would be moving in to this LGBT community.
