Transparent” Season 1 Episode 4 “Moppa” is already up at Amazon Prime for streaming.  Maura told her youngest child, Ali, that she’s a trans. She and her daughters then spent the day at the mall, but they had an unfortunate encounter at the mall’s bathroom. Meanwhile, Josh examined his relationship with Rita. Read on for the full recap of this episode.

Ali (Gaby Hoffman) was still high and loaded when she got a visit from her dad at her place. He finally told her the truth, and she was completely in awe about it. She said she has finally figured out her dad, and she wondered — how was she going to address her father now? She figured Moppa would be a good choice. It’s for both Momma and Poppa.

However, after she got over her hangover, Ali called her big sister Sarah (Amy Landecker) who came to her house. Sober Ali was more unaccepting of this news about her father. What was that about? She felt really weird about it. She wondered about Josh, and Sarah reminded her not to jump the gun on their dad about coming out to Josh. There were proper ways to handle this with trans, according to her.

Sarah, by the way, was back together with Tammy (Melora Hardin), and she already left her husband for her. Tammy, meanwhile, is still with her wife, and each time Sarah would ask if she finally told Barb the truth, Tammy had all these excuses.

Sarah confessed to Ali that she has been seeing Tammy, and the news was not a surprise to her little sister. What was a surprise though was Sarah’s confession that Tammy made her “squirt.” Female ejaculation is apparently a real thing.

As the girls were discussing all these secrets, Maura (Jeffrey Tambor) called to invite them over for brunch at the mall. Fully dressed up, the three women headed out, with Ali being the least excited. They got their makeovers, and they ate their meal, and then they went to pee afterwards.

At the women’s bathroom at the mall, Maura was getting all these glances from other people. One lady spoke out and told her off, saying she shouldn’t be in the women’s area. While Ali was in one of the stalls peeing, Sarah defended her father against the nasty lady. But Maura didn’t want any more drama, so they left and Maura peed in the parking lot’s bathroom.

Later that night, Ali, still feeling odd about her father, decided to cut her hair really short, while Sarah thought she would drop in on Tammy, who accused her of being a stalker. Sarah demanded that she has to tell her wife already, if Tammy really loved her.

Tammy: I’m telling her next week, okay?
Sarah: You need to tell her now. I fucking left my husband for you.
Tammy: I never told you to do that.
Sarah: What? You said that you wanted to spend the rest of your life with me! You said, “I wanna fuck you everyday for the rest of my life.” Do you not remember that?
Tammy: People say shit when they’re fucking!

Sarah was losing her mind and attempted to walk out on Tammy. But when she agreed she would finally tell Barb, the two seemed to work it out.

This whole time, Josh was sleeping with Ali’s best friend, Syd (Carrie Brownstein), as a way of coping with his breakup with Kaya and getting fired from work. But he made her promise not to tell his sister about it. Something about what Syd said — that people knew about him and their babysitter Rita years ago — triggered something in him.  Later, Josh confronted Rita about this, wanting to know if this was true, and Rita confirmed that yes, everyone knew they were doing stuff together. But it wasn’t the reason why she was no longer their babysitter then.

Rita: Your parents are strange people, honey.

This episode also featured Maura’s trans neighbor, Divina, who taught her how to walk like a woman. Moreover, it had a flashback to 1994, where it showed that Mort had this habit of checking in to hotels so that he could play dress up. In this one incident, Mort was with his friend Marc (Bradley Whitford), who was introduced in the previous episode “Rollin” (recap here). It was Marc, a.ka. Marcy, who gave him the name Maura.

That’s what happened on “Transparent” Season 1 Episode 4 “Moppa,” which can now be watched via streaming on Amazon Prime. We’ll be bringing the next episode recap tomorrow. Check back to Movie News Guide (MNG).
