Transparent” Season 1 Episode 5 “Wedge” is up for viewing at Amazon Prime via streaming. Josh learned of the big secret from his siblings. Meanwhile, Ed, the second husband of the children’s mother, Shelly, has gone missing. Read on for what happened in this episode in the recap below.

The episode opened with Josh (Jay Duplass) looking lost amidst the music and lights at a dance club. He saw this Asian woman dancing and made friends with her. The two got it on pretty quickly, and soon, they were having sex at Josh’s place.

Sarah (Amy Landecker) was making out with Tammy at the family house. She finally left her wife and was planning on moving in with Sarah. As the two started getting hot and heavy in bed, Tammy received a call from her ex, Barb, who asked if she could take in her daughter, Bianca, Tammy’s stepchild. Sarah thought that it would be okay. Bianca could babysit the kids.

Later, Josh found Bianca, Tammy and Sarah at the family house. He was still interested in flipping it, especially since the Asian he met was in real estate, and he made sure Sarah knew about his plans. He also made Tammy promise not to change anything in the house, should they stay there longer. Tammy agreed.

Ali (Gaby Hoffman) was at her mother’s place, where she learned that Shelly’s (Judith Light) husband has been missing. Her mom didn’t seem to care because Ed (Lawrence Pressman) apparently did this a lot. Besides, she had to go to a doctor’s appointment, which actually was a pedicure appointment. But Ali, perhaps still coming to grips with the news about Maura, was not letting this pass. She obsessed about looking for Ed and asked the residence’s security guard to help find her stepdad. They went to the usual spots, but he wasn’t there. Ali was officially worried.

She called up her brother and sister to help find Ed, but as their search was fruitless. The three Pfefferman kids ended up having drinks and eating at the restaurant by the marina. There, Ali couldn’t help it. She kept ranting about the things happening around her, like Ed’s disappearance and Josh’s dead baby, which surprised Sarah. Ali was becoming so high strung and agitated that Josh wondered what the matter was. Finally, she told her brother about Maura.

Josh: You’re scaring the shit out of me, Al.
Ali: I love you very much…Dad…is a woman. Thinks he’s a woman. Wants to be a woman. Something like that.
Sarah: He’s trans.

Josh could only laugh, and Sarah reminded him that it was not supposed to be funny.

While the kids were gone, Shelly had a guest at her house, rabbi Raquel (Kathryn Hahn), who wanted to see sickly old Ed. Shelly couldn’t tell her where he was, but instead convinced Raquel to date her son, Josh. Later, when the kids returned to their mother’s house, they all met Raquel, and Shelly pressed on with the matchmaking. The kids also found out that their mother knew about Maura but said she was not one to judge. It was their father’s kink, and everyone has one, according to Shelly. They started yelling at each other in front of the rabbi, who was feeling uncomfortable to be in the middle of this.

Ali was on the phone talking to the police about Ed, but just then, he walked in carrying cotton candy and a caricature of himself. He apparently wandered off into a carnival or park.

Meanwhile, Maura was hanging out with her trans friends. Davina (Alexandra Billings) let her have one of her pills (for hormones), and they also had lunch together with Shea. A man approached Shea to compliment her for her beautiful eyes, and he turned out to be Gary, whom Maura knew when he was Mort. When Gary saw her, he started to snicker. This was another instance where Maura had to learn to deal with the reaction of the people around her.

And that’s it for “Transparent” Season 1 Episode 5 “Wedge,” which can be viewed via streaming on Amazon Prime. We’ll have the recaps of the second half of the series next week, so come back to Movie News Guide (MNG) for it.
