Eric Dane is the lead star of “The Last Ship,” an action-packed series airing on Sundays at 9:00 p.m. on TNT. But before taking on the role of Commander Tom Chandler with such authority, Dane was more familiar to TV fans as the sexy and flirty McSteamy in the medical drama series “Grey’s Anatomy.” What made him decide to take a shift in roles? Read further to find out.
Dane started acting on television in the early 1990s, but his breakout success came in 2000 when he became a regular cast of the hit series “Charmed” for two seasons. In 2005, Dane was only supposed to appear as a guest on “Grey’s Anatomy,” then an up and coming show, but because viewers loved his smooth and sensual character, Mark Sloan, he was absorbed as a series regular.
He earned the nickname “McSteamy” on and off the show for his very first scene, where he literally stepped out of the bathroom steaming and hot, and became one of the reasons why the show earned such a following. But by 2012, Dane left “Grey’s Anatomy” to try out new roles. One month later, he signed up for “The Last Ship.”
“Grey’s Anatomy is a world — it’s not about any one individual actor and the storylines were sort of…you know, heading in different directions. So it was an opportunity for me to go and I was interested in something different,” said Dane in an interview with Entertainment Weekly back in 2013. He also said that his role on “The Last Ship” was something he could not pass up.
In an interview with TV Line, Dane said that after playing Mark Sloan on “Grey’s Anatomy” for many years, doing Tom Chandler allowed him to work with something different, describing his new character as “honorable, consistent and sincere” — all the traits that Mark Sloan didn’t have. He also liked that Chandler was very human. He also expressed being proud of his new show, saying that the drama and action remained consistent all throughout the ten episodes for the “The Last Ship.”
