It is an emotional and inspiring wake-up call in the new episode of “Undercover Boss” Season 6 Episode 5 “Phenix Salon INC,” which aired last Jan. 9, 2015 at 8:00 p.m. on CBS.
Based in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Phenix Salon Suites is a unique fast-growing business franchise. It has more than 50 locations and 1,700 salon professionals and generates $25 million a year in revenue. Gina Rivera is the co-founder and president.
About the business process, salon and spa professionals can be walk-in clients and rent a suite for their business. The company will also provide the equipment. Its income comes from the monthly payment for rent. Gina’s family is in the salon business ever since, so she decided to pursue the business.
For Gina’s first undercover task, she goes to Boca Raton, Florida to be a barber. Michele teaches her how to cut hair and shave facial hair. She thinks Gina is too clumsy with haircut. However, Gina does a great job with the shaving despite her intense fear of cutting the man’s face. After the training, Michele shares about being a working mother. Gina can relate because she is a mother herself.
The next undercover task is in Las Vegas, Nevada to be a nail technician. G immediately puts her to the test by making her do nail art on a client’s feet. Gina is uneasy because the client’s toenails are slightly dirty. After the gruesome task, G cheerfully invites Gina for lunch. She shares that her daughter is going to law school. However, remembering her daughter’s car accident, she recalls that her mother really died from it. Gina also remembers her mother who passed away due to pancreatic cancer. G fears that her Phenix Salon Suites branch might close because it is not fully occupied.
Gina’s third undercover task is with Felisa, a cosmetologist. Felisa teaches her how to install a weave. Gina is too clumsy that Felisa just makes her assistant finish it. After training, Felisa opens up about how communication “sucks” in the company. She ordered for additional equipment but did not receive one. She also complains about how close the walls are that she can hear noise from other rooms. About her personal life, she is proud to be able to bring her kids to private school. She wants the best for her children because of how her parents raised her.
The last undercover task is to be a hair stylist in Long Beach, California. She meets hair stylist Richie. While styling a client’s hair, Richie shares about his frustration on the opening of their Phenix Salon Suites franchise. He wanted to have fashion shows and other glamorous stuff to entice high-end clients. The opening for him was a flop.
About Richie’s personal life, he shares that his family was homeless for two years because of his inability to pay $2 million worth of hospital bills for his premature baby who had major surgeries as she grows up. Richie brings her to a homeless shelter to give the kids a makeover for fun. Gina is amazed with his courage and good heart.
Finally, Gina gives the big reveal to her chosen employees. She gives Michele $10,000 for her child’s therapy, free one-year rent for her suite and an all-expense paid vacation with her family in Maui. For G, she assures that her Phenix Salon Suites will be fully occupied in no time and gives her $5,000 for nail salon supplies, an all-expense paid cruise and $3,000 for her daughter’s education. The undercover boss wants to give Felisa her additional salon equipment, a solution for the noisy suites, $10,000 cash and free school tuition for two years. Lastly, she gives Richie $5,000 as a fund-raiser start-up for hospital bills, a brand-new car to easily transport his daughter to and from the hospital and a house worth $250,000.
After the four business talks, Gina is left in the room, still crying with joy.
