“unREAL” Season 1 Episode 2 “Relapse” aired last Monday, June 8, 2015 at 10:00 PM on Lifetime. In this episode, Rachel Goldberg’s (Shiri Appleby) former roommate reappeared into her life and threatened to use the contents of her laptop against her if she didn’t pay the rent that she owed her. During the show, Quinn King (Constance Zimmer) instructed the three producers to find them another villain, in exchange for a good cash bonus, in time for the ball that night. However, things quickly went south for Rachel after a family tragedy struck one of the girls. Read on to learn more about this episode.
The episode began by showing the audience that Rachel Goldberg (Shiri Appleby) had been living inside one of the show’s trailer trucks. As the last call for breakfast came out, she turned her clothes inside out so that she could wear it again, and used hand sanitizer to clean herself up. She then got the surprise of her life after her old roommate, Bethany (Eve Harlow) arrived, and dumped all of her stuff at her feet, as she was going on tour with her band, and she had rented out Rachel’s old room. She then told her that she was holding Rachel’s laptop hostage until Rachel could pay the rent that she owed her, or else its contents, which contained things that could hurt others on the crew of the show, would be revealed. She was then given twenty four hours to pay up.
She then had to clarify to Adam Cromwell (Freddie Stroma) who was demanding that she give him tea and shaving cream, that that was the job of the show’s personal assistants, and barged into his shower and threatened to humiliate him on national television if he looked at her, as she desperately needed to take a shower.
Rachel then walked in to the production room, where Quinn King (Constance Zimmer) told them that a large cash bonus would be given to either Rachel, Shia (Aline Elasmar) or Jay (Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman), if they managed to give her a new villain. Upon Rachel’s advice, Quinn told Shia to concentrate on Pepper (Stephanie Bennett) and told to Rachel to concentrate on turning Anna Martin (Johanna Braddy), the smart lawyer, into the villain.
Shia managed to plant into Pepper’s mind that the other girls felt that she was too much of a little girl to be “wife material”; and Rachel managed to plant in Anna’s mind that Grace (Nathalie Kelley) was spending too much “alone time” with Adam, while the rest of the girls prepared for the “Cinderella Ball”.
Meanwhile, Jay pulled Shamiqua (Christine Liang) and Athena (Natasha Burnett) aside, and discovered his villain in Athena, who was there to become famous.
Quinn got a surprise of her own when Cynthia Wilton (Sonya Salomaa) came to visit her husband, Chet Wilton (Craig Bierko), and lost no time in telling her that she was pregnant. Because of this, she told Chet that she was done with him, and ended up with conflicted feelings after he revealed that he was having a house built for her.
Right before the show started, after learning that Anna’s father, who had a pre-existing heart condition, had been brought to the ICU, Quinn warned Rachel to “leave her conscience out the door”, which also bothered Jeremy (Josh Kelly). At the ball, Pepper proved that she was “adult” enough by making her voice deeper and by being aggressive towards Adam. Rachel then encouraged Anna to do away with Grace, who was laughing and dancing with Adam. However, she stopped and told Rachel that she didn’t want to humiliate someone on television like that.
Because of this, Rachel told Anna about her father, and ended up having to chase her, along with Jeremy, as she started to run out of the mansion.
Meanwhile, Jay got his villain after Faith (Breeda Wool) accidentally bumped into her.
Rachel then managed to find Anna at a bar, and comforted her inside the bathroom after learning that Anna’s father had died. However, Anna became angry at Rachel and claimed that she was done with the show after she discovered a fire engine waiting for her.
The next day, Adam came along with Rachel, and got her to stop filming Anna’s eulogy at the funeral. However, after talking to Anna’s brother, they got him to convince Anna to return to the show. Bethany then called and told Rachel that she had until ten in the evening to pay her. If she didn’t her pictures and videos with Jeremy would be emailed to everyone in the show’s crew.
Later, Quinn viewed all the promotional videos featuring each of their girls as the villain. Quinn then got the video that Rachel was hiding at her back, and decided that Anna, thanks to Rachel’s edits, was the new villain of the show. Rachel then got the money, but since she was four minutes late to the deadline, Bethany released the photos and videos to everyone on the show.
