“unREAL” Season 1 Episode 1 “Return” aired last Monday, June 1, 2015 at 10:00 PM on Lifetime. In this episode, at the very first taping of the first episode of the current cycle of the reality television show “Everlasting”, things quickly went south until the “mystery freelancer”, Rachel Goldberg (Shiri Appleby), a producer with a knack for spotting drama and good reality television, returned to the show. More is then learned about the different relationships behind the show, and the reason why Rachel left in the first place. Read on to learn more about this episode.

The episode began with the very first opening shots of the reality dating television show “Everlasting”, in which the host, Graham (Brennan Elliot) and the show’s suitor, Adam Cromwell (Freddie Stroma), the heir to the British Cromwell hotel fortune, welcomed the first girl to alight from the carriage, who began to woo him by playing the violin for him. However, Quinn (Constance Zimmer), the executive producer of the show, called for a “cut”, as she didn’t want Shamiqua (Constance Liang) to be the first girl out because of her color and asked where limousine three was. In response, Rachel Goldberg (Shiri Appleby), a young producer, who was on the floor of the limousine, told her that they were going as fast as they could, and got her girls- Grace (Natahalie Kelley), Britney (Arielle Kebbel), Faith (Breeda Wool), Mary (Ashley Scott) and Anna (Johanna Brady), by showing them a picture of Adam.

As soon as Rachel arrived, Quinn had her filmed walking into where they were, which shocked a lot of people including Jeremy (Josh Kelley), her ex-boyfriend, whose new fiancé, Lizzie (Siobhan Williams), worked with them; and to  Shia (Aline Elasmar), who cleaned up after Rachel after the crazy stunt she had pulled in the season finale of the last cycle, which gave them great ratings, and which caused Rachel to be on probation, to go to court mandated therapy, and to do community service. However, Quinn reasoned to Shia that she got Rachel back as she had as Rachel “had the best instincts for drama”, “got the best sound- bytes” from the girls, and was able to make good reality television as  people easily trusted her, which made it easier for them to open up to her, which allowed them to get good raw footage of the girls.

Soon after she arrived, Quinn had to pacify Chet Wilton (Craig Bierko), the creator of  “Everlasting”, who was firing everyone left and right, as he was mad at the fact that Adam had fled. She then hooked up with him while she sent Rachel to get Adam back, and to get him to sign his contract, which she did, by telling him that there was a “back-up guy”. After taking the bait, he made them promise to have one of the dating sites to be his newly opened hotel in Napa, whose opening had been a fiasco, which confirmed Rachel’s suspicions that his appearance on the show was just “damage control”.

Before that, Jeremy confronted Rachel and told her to steer clear of him since his fiancé was working with them now.

They then taped the opening sequence, in which Britney, who immediately kissed Adam when she was introduced, was painted as the villain, and religious Faith (Breeda Wool) was painted as the awkward one who would get booted out early on. The girls were then treated to cocktails while Adam mingled among them, and got to know them more in the one on one’s with him. Quinn then wished everyone luck, told them to protect Anna and Grace, and told them they would get bonuses for additional drama.

Rachel then salvaged Shia’s mistake, by having Adam cheer up Faith, whom Shia made cry; got Mary to open up, which painted her as the desperate single mother; and planted an idea in Adam’s head to throw Quinn completely off after she pulled him away as he was passionately kissing Grace. Because of this, he immediately cut off Britney, the villain, and asked, among others, Shamiqua, Grace, Anna, Mary and Faith to stay during the first elimination round.

Rachel then went off the radio and got Britney to open up using her background, who sold it for the cameras, after realizing that she was being manipulated. Britney then spat on Rachel and angrily left, crying.

Later, Shia showed Lizzie the footage of  why Rachel had left- she had drunkenly told the runner up of the last cycle that she was just the runner up, and stole the car. This got good ratings as they made it seem like the contestant went crazy.

Afterwards, Rachel, who felt like she was being blackmailed as the charges against her were nowhere close to being dropped, discovered that Madison (Genevieve Buechner), the new intern, was covering for her for community service, and that she was going to have therapy with their psychologist, Dr. Wagerstein (Amy Hill), as Quinn needed her at the show.

Rachel then stepped into the trailer, where she watched the contestants via television monitors. There, looking lifeless, Rachel watched as Adam hooked up with Grace, as Faith prayed, and as Anna threw up in the toilet.
