Cara Delevingne and Dane Dehaan will encounter all sorts of aliens in Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. A few of them has already made their debuts in the most recent trailer released by STX Entertainment and Europa. In an interview, director Luc Besson talked about the villains in his upcoming movie and why he does not want to reveal the face of evil just yet.
Know Your Enemy
Alpha, home of billions of different creature hailing from all four corners of the universe and the setting of the upcoming movie will introduce many different characters who may be friends or foe.
One of the baddies is Igon Sirrus, described as a space pirate and an enemy to the galaxy. He had a brief appearance in the trailer released last week and, surprisingly, he was an original character created for the movie.
“He’s something I invent[ed],” he told Nerdist. The renowned filmmaker explained that reading a comic book will take about 20 minutes of the reader’s time. It is necessary to add a bit more of his own imagination in order to expand the story to two hours.
However, Igon Sirrus is not the biggest threat in the movie. He was seen pointing a gun at two hooded characters, but he is not the main villain of the story.
That is something that viewers have to figure out when they head to theaters in three months. “I’m a little fed up with films where, after 20 minutes, you know who is the villain, what’s the plot, and you basically know the entire film,” he explained. So, do not explain the identity of the main villain to be revealed in promos either. Besson also stated that the villain will not be the one that viewers anticipate. That, he said, is exactly why people watch a movie: they want to know what happens next.
He did, however, gave a hint about what is in store in the movie. The challenge for Valerian, Laureline, and the viewers is to figure out who are lying and who are telling the truth.
Not A Typical Comic Book Movie
Besson hopes to raise the standards of comic book movies with Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. With several blockbuster movies such as Wonder Woman and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 coming out this year, the director is confident that his new movie is going to offer a different experience to viewers.
He stated that what makes the title different is not because the material is French, but because there is no committee of about ten people making orders like in American productions. Besson not only directed, but wrote the script of the movie.
The Leon: The Professional and The Fifth Element director has been a fan of Valerian and Laureline since he was 10. The original comics was written by Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mezieres.
In addition, he told Polygon that the movie will feature two stories: one is the 28th century Alpha governed by evil and a smaller arc centering on the unrequited love of a boy to a girl. Even if the viewers do not like some aspects of the movie, Besson is confident that they will love Valerian and Laureline.
He, himself, is a fan of the characters he brought to life on the big screen. He likes them so much that he hopes to make a sequel. “Whenever I see them I smile,” he stated.
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets will be released on Jul. 21. The movie also stars Rihanna, Ethan Hawke, Clive Owen, Kris Wu and John Goodman.
