There is still a little under four months before the big screen adaptation of a popular comic book titled Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets arrive to theaters worldwide, but director Luc Besson is already starting to map out the sequel.

A New Comic Book Movie Franchise

The next few months is going to be huge for the movie industry. Marvel and DC are releasing big blockbuster movies including Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Wonder Woman. Meanwhile, Europa will introduce Valerian and Laureline to the big screen.

Based on a sci-fi comic book series from French author Pierre Christin and illustrator Jean-Claude Mezeieres, the movie will star Cara Delevingne and Dane DeHaan in the lead roles. It was directed by Besson, the same man responsible for The Fifth Element and Leon: The Professional.

While the upcoming movie does not have the same name recall as Wonder WomanValerian and the City of a Thousand Planets have been making waves since it was firs previewed last year at San Diego Comic Con. The movie managed to catch the attention of the geeky crowd thanks to the colorful interstellar worlds recreated for the big screen. Today, the upcoming movie is still one of the most anticipated titles in 2017.

This must be why Besson seems confident that the new sci-fi movie will be a success in the box office. During a press event, the filmmaker talked about the possibility of making a sequel to follow his summer 2017 movie.

“I’m writing already,” he was quoted by Screen Rant. “I like to be ready in case it’s working.”

He also stated that he would love to helm a sequel because he loves Valerian and Laureline. “[T]hey’re fun together,” he said.

Whether the movie will perform spectacularly on the box office remains to be seen, but it has all the elements to make it a success commercially. On Rotten Tomatoes, 99% of viewers said they wanted to watch the movie. If it does succeed, Besson has enough materials to use from the original graphic novels.

New Trailer To Debut This Week

Meanwhile, according to reports,  the first full-length trailer for Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets will drop on Wednesday, Mar. 29. To recall, the first teaser trailer was released way back in November. It is about time that a new trailer debuts.

To drum up interest, a new poster as well as a four-second teaser were released online. See below:

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets Movie Details

DeHaan is Valerian, a special operative tasked by the government to maintain order throughout the universe. Valerian has more than a professional intent with his partner Laureline (Delevingne), but because of his history with women and her conservative values, she continues to reject his feelings.

Their Commander (Owen) orders the two to journey toward Alpha, a metropolis that is home to over seventeen million inhabitants hailing from all four corners of the universe. The residents of Alpha have used their different talents and resources to move each and every citizen forward, but not everyone has the same intent. According to the movie’s synopsis, dark forces are hiding in Alpha.

Besson not only directed the movie, he also sits as a producer and screenwriter. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets will land on the big screen on Jul. 21, 2017.
