Jonathan Rhys Meyers is going to be a major player in Season 5 of Vikings on History. According to show creator Michael Hirst, the new character is Heahsmund, and he will also be a worthy adversary to Ivar the Boneless (Alex Hogh Andersen). Meyers will appear in the upcoming season finale of Vikings Season 4.
Vikings Season 4: End of an Era
This week’s episode saw the final reckoning between King Ecbert of Wessex (Linus Roache) and the sons of Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel). In Episode On the Eve, Ivar led the Vikings in launching an attack on the kingdom and came face-to-face with Prince Aethelwulf (Moe Dunford). The age-old battle between Wessex and Kattegat will come to a close.
Hirst also explained that the events of Vikings Season 4 Episode 20 will be crucial and its effects will reverberate in the upcoming fifth season. The battle between sons of Ragnar and Ecbert will give way to a new set of adversaries. In the season finale that will air next week, the warrior bishops will make their debut.
Ivar the Boneless vs Heahsmund
While the rivalry between Ragnar and Ecbert became a major force in the second half of Vikings Season 4, the next installment might be about Ivar and Heahsmund. Hirst recounted that the warrior bishops in history books piqued his curiosity. “They were crazy,” the screenwriter told EW. “They believed totally in Christianity and the message, and yet, on the battlefield, they were totally berserk.”
But, one bishop stood out the most: Heahsmund. Hirst also revealed, “He’s a man of Wessex.” Meyers will portray the character on television. The actor previously worked with Hirst in The Tudors.
The award-winning screenwriter also shared that Heahsmund will be a worthy adversary to Ivar in the coming season. He added that “[h]is whole life is about deeply passionate commitments.” Vikings Season 4 airs every Wednesday night on History.
