Vikings Season 5 will see Ragnar Lothbrok’s (Travis Fimmel) children rise and make their mark in history. Conflict will arise between the warriors and the people surrounding them. However, it looks like a major player will reenter the arena. A new fan theory suggests that Sigurd (David Lindstrom) is not dead.

Rising From Six Feet Under

While Ragna’s children will be the focus of the series moving forward, there is a conflict between the warriors. In the previous season, Ivar the Boneless (Alex High Andersen) emerged to become the black sheep of the family, locking horns with his brothers and believing that he alone should carry the legacy of their father. In the end, because of his temper, he killed Sigurd.

However, fans should not rule Sigurd out of the story just yet. A new theory claims that Ragnar’s third son with Aslaug (Alyssa Sutherland) has not reached Valhalla.

Posted by Vikinger on YouTube and reported by iBTimes, the fan believes that Snake in the Eye is not dead yet. After suffering from an ax lodged in his abdomen, the Viking was actually left unconscious in the river bank, but there still life left in him.

This theory is based on real history. Vikings is still a fictional account of the life of the legendary warriors. However, Sigurd, Ragnar, Ivar and the rest of the characters on the period drama really existed centuries ago.

Moreover, while the critically-acclaimed series is loosely based on real-life events, a lot of facts were retained and woven into the story for television. Ragnar’s death at King Aelle’s snake pit, for example, was very much accurate to how the real Viking leader was killed in history.

That said, the theory that Sigurd is alive is not baseless. As the fan pointed out, the story of the real Sigurd “Snake-in-The-Eye” was not as short as what was depicted in the TV series.

The Real Story of Sigurd

Instead, Sigurd lived a longer existence. The Viking married Blaeja, the daughter of King Aelle of Northumbria. Their union was interesting because Blaeja’s father, of course, had Sigurd’s father thrown into a pit of snake resulting to the latter’s death.

However, after hearing about his father’s death, Sigurd did die not because the hot-headed Ivar attacked him, but in his own hands. Out of grief, the Viking mutilated himself to the bone using a knife. Thus, ending his story.

So the theory goes that Sigurd is not dead. He was supposedly found by Blaeja (Caitlin Scott) lying unconscious by the river where his brothers left his body.

Moreover, some fans believe that the ax used to kill Sigurd was way too small to be fatal. Others pointed out that Blaeja will probably have more screentime in Vikings Season 5 considering her “highlighted” role in Season 4.

However, there is a reason to believe that Sigurd if, indeed, dead and done for. The first trailer for the upcoming season opens with the funeral of the Viking.

Right now, there is no way to be sure if the son of Ragnar is dead. Until show creator Michael Hirst confirms the fate of the character, fans should wait for Season 5 Episode 11 to find out what is next.

Vikings Season 5 will see the return of the core cast Katheryn Winnick, Clive Standen and Gustaf Skarsgard as Lagertha, Rollo and Floki. Aside from Andersen, Alexander Ludwig, Jordan Patrick Smith, Marco Ilson are also set to reprise their roles as Ragnar’s sons. The upcoming season will also introduce Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Bishop Heahmund, the new big villain to face the Northsmen.

History is yet to announce an exact premiere date for the upcoming season. The series is expected to be released later this year.
