Fast & Furious is one of the highest-grossing movie franchises in the world, but it is not perfect. Last time, one of its lead stars, Michelle Rodriguez, demanded that it become a trailblazer in fighting sexism in Hollywood and threatened to leave if its female characters do not improve. Now, Vin Diesel who stars and sit as a producer, has reacted.
Vin Diesel Supports Strong Female Characters
There has been eight Fast & Furious movies since the franchise debuted in 2001 and two more are on the way. There is also a planned spin-off but remains unconfirmed.
Its most recent offering, The Fate of the Furious, was a worldwide phenomenon. The movie that saw Diesel’s Dom Toretto ally with cyber criminal Cipher (played by Charlize Theron) opened with $98.8 million at the U.S. box office and ended its theatrical run with a staggering $1.2 billion. Its success and what comes after are likely to influence the future of Hollywood and Rodriguez is using her position of power to make a change.
On Instagram last week, she threatened to quit if the franchise does not start giving women equal opportunities to female actors. Read MNG’s full report here.
On Saturday, Rodriguez followed up her controversial post on Instagram. Speaking with Diesel, the 38-year-old actor explained who exactly she was addressing.
“Vin, for many years you’ve been the biggest supporter of strong women. I’ve always appreciated that about you throughout the years,” Rodriguez told her co-star. “Just know that if I ever post anything, that it’s not you I’m talking to.”
Rodriguez and Diesel have been co-stars since The Fast and the Furious in 2001. She also plays the role of his wife in the franchise.
However, even if Rodriguez has threatened to walk away if nothing changes, Diesel fully supports his co-star and friend. In the same Instagram post, the 49-year-old expressed his opinion about Rodriguez’s push for better female characters.
“Proud of Our saga… but we must try to reach higher each time,” Diesel wrote on the caption. “The challenge is what makes it fun and exciting. It’s also why this saga has reached the level that it has… you have been the best fans in film history and we are forever grateful… Dom and Letty.”
This year’s The Fate of the Furious is already a step in the right direction. Theron’s Cipher is the first female chief villain of the franchise, but she is the single female character who has a vital importance to the franchise versus four male leads (Diesel, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Jason Statham and Kurt Russell). The writers behind the Fast & Furious franchise should hear Rodriguez’s advice for Fast 9 especially with the rise of female empowerment in Hollywood thanks to Wonder Woman and other movie heroines.
Will Charlize Theron’s Cipher Return?
In other news, the franchise’s toughest villain so far, Cipher, is not going anywhere. According to a report by Variety, Theron’s character is set to return to the planned spin-off that will star Johnson’s Agent Luke Hobbs and Statham’s Deckard Shaw.
While still not confirmed, the source claims that the planned next movie will force the two to team up in order to track the cyber terrorist. However, nothing has been set in stone as of yet because the movie is still in its early stages. A script has not even been written yet so Theron’s participation is still uncertain right now.
A start date also has not been set because scheduling production will surely be a problem as the lead star, Johnson, signs up to a number of movies including Rampage and Black Adam set to released in the following years.
The latest offering from the Fast & Furious franchise, The Fate of the Furious, is now available on Digital HD. UHD, DVD and Blu-Ray copies will be available for purchase starting July 11.
