Vin Diesel has, in the last few years, become a bankable movie star. He has starred in multiple movies and has also revived one of his franchises. Earlier this year, he returned to this stalled franchise which had been on a break for years.
Following his return this year, it is now being revealed that a sequel is in development.
xXx 4 is officially being developed
Screen Rant reported that development on xXx 4 has officially begun. The official update comes from the newly formed distribution company The H Collective.
In the beginning of this year, Diesel returned to the xXx franchise with xXx: Return of Xander Cage. The franchise was put on hold for years before Diesel decided to return as Xander Cage, an extreme athlete turned NSA operative.
Other projects from the newly formed company
xXx 4 is just one of the projects that the newly formed distribution company is working on. Franchise producers Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum have collaborated with Sid Ganis and Mark Johnson to form this self-financing company.
As a part of their announced movies, xXx 4 will be their first project. Roth and Kirschenbaum will serve as producers for the project. The outlet also speculated that since xXx 4 stars Diesel, he would come aboard as a producer as well.
The trio produced the previous movie, which makes it highly possible that they will collaborate for the sequel as well. Apart from xXx 4, the company is producing an action-comedy titled Three Sisters starring xXx: Return of Xander Cage star Ruby Rose and a drama titled The Parts You Lose.
Performance of xXx: Return of Xander Cage
When xXx: Return of Xander Cage released, it breathed new life into the xXx franchise. The movie did not do well in the US market but was a commercial success overseas.
With a box office collection of almost $350 million, the producers think that having a sequel is well-deserved. Many critics who reviewed the movie labeled it similar to the Fast & Furious franchise.
With an IMDb rating of 5.2 and score of 43% on Rotten Tomatoes, the film did not really manage to impress critics.
Similarity with Fast & Furious franchise
In Fast & Furious and xXx movies, Diesel plays an anti-hero/rogue operative and puts together a team of criminal misfits to help save the world from a catastrophic threat.
xXx: Return of Xander Cage was no different. Diesel’s character returned from a self-imposed exile after a Government operative recruited him. He then put together a team of rogues, fought with them and ultimately joined hands with them to stop a major threat.
No official details including the story or a director for xXx 4 have been released yet. The makers have also not confirmed if the same cast will return or not. But going by the way xXx: Return of Xander Cage ended, the sequel will perhaps take off from there itself.
Cage and his new team will perhaps find themselves facing a bigger challenge. The team will come together to fight this threat but will hit a roadblock. After the hindrance, the team will regroup again and save the day. No release date is known for xXx 4 yet.
