A petition that seeks to remove Kanye West from the Glastonbury Festival line-up has already been signed by over 50,000 on Charge.Org. The event, which is set to takes place in June, has had many music fans angry upon learning that West is the headline act. They describe this choice as “an insult to music fans all over the world.”
The petition to replace Kanye West with a different rock artist was started by Neil Lonsdale of Britain. When the organizers for the festival made their Twitter announcement of the artist’s appearance, his first thoughts weren’t to start a petition, but to question if West was the right choice.
Lonsdale believes that Kanye’s music doesn’t bring that festival vibe. As a frequent visitor of musical festivals, he thinks that this sort of event should feature music played on strings and guitars and not hip-hop. He believes that Kanye is not the right choice.
“The petition was started off as almost like a joke reaction to his announcement,” he said to BBC. He just didn’t think it would become quite popular overnight.
And while the petition has been gaining attention from both festival goers and non-festival goers alike, some have apparently accused Londale of being racist. But he’s not bothered by this and insists that it’s about the music. He admits, however, that he doesn’t particularly like Kanye’s songs.
“It doesn’t speak to me in the same way that a guitar band would,” he clarified.
Meanwhile, the other confirmed acts to the Glastonbury Festival include David Grohl and the Foo Fighters and Lionel Richie. Huffington Post UK reports that Florence Welch, Coldplay and Oasis may also grace the event, but no official details about this have been released as of press time.
This is not the very first controversy the Glastonbury has received about their headlining acts. Back in 2008, when Jay Z was announced, a lot of the festival-goers were also upset. Jay Z proceeded to the festival, however and it’s highly likely Kanye West won’t be backing out of this one as well.
