“Blade Runner 2” is in the works right now, and “Sicario” director Denis Villeneuve is helming. The Quebecois director sat down with Collider and spoke about his “deep fear” of making a sequel to such an enduring classic. Read on for more details.
Villeneuve has been dreaming about making sci-fi movies since he was ten, but when Ridley Scott offered the director’s seat on “Blade Runner 2” to the 47-year-old Canadian, the first thing he felt was a “deep fear” of messing up a film he has grown up loving.
“I’m totally aware of the huge challenge. It’s a risk I know that every single fan who walks into the theater will walk in with a baseball bat. I’m aware of that and I respect that, and it’s okay with me because it’s art. Art is risk, and I have to take risks. It’s gonna be the biggest risk of my life but I’m okay with that”
“Blade Runner 2” is currently in pre-production and starts filming next summer, with Ryan Gosling supposedly cast as the protagonist. Speaking with Collider, Villeneuve recently spoke all things Blade Runner, here are the highlights:
He will neither confirm, nor deny how far into the future the sequel is set from the original. According to Villeneuve, the less you know, the better it is for you. He did say, though, the movie would be autonomous but would have links with the original.
The screenplay, which is penned by Michael Green, Ridley Scott and original writer Hampton Fancher, Villeneuve said that it is “fantastic” and “powerful.”
“I’m coming from a small town in Quebec ….and I still remember the shock, the impact of seeing the first frames, the first pictures coming out of Blade Runner. Me and my friends were in awe, so excited and the movie was such a strong cinematic experience. A new way of seeing sci-fi.” Villeneuve said.
Harrison Ford is coming back, and he has been attached to the project since before they chose the director. He is also, “one of the nicest human beings” Villeneuve has ever met.
