The 53-year-old “Expendables 2” action star carries out his Mind-blowing split between two Volvo trucks in a new commercial that’s gone viral on YouTube. The commercial entitles “The Epic Split” and already has been viewed more than 6 million times.
When the video starts, Van Damme appears on the scene with his folded arms and closed eyes and says in a voiceover, “I’ve had my ups and downs. My fair share of bumpy roads and heavy winds. That’s what made me what I am today.”
Then the camera pulls back, and shows Van Damme to be standing on the rear-view mirror of two side-by-side trucks. The trucks are traveling down an empty chunk of highway, and the distance between the two vehicles gradually increases.
“Now I stand here before you. What you see is a body crafted to perfection,” he boasts in the ad. Talking about his killer thigh muscles, he adds, “A pair of legs engineered to defy the laws of physics and a mindset to master the most epic of splits.”
And then the two trucks slowly move apart while they traveling in reverse until Van Damme achieves one of his trademark complete splits.
Jan-Inge Svensson, the engineer behind the development of the system’s software at Volvo Trucks, explains that this short video was set up to show the stability of Volvo steering. He says that the trucks are designed with such a directional stability and control that you can reverse them over a long distance with very high precision. He also mentioned that the ad used no computer effects, though safety lines to prevent Van Damme’s potential “Sudden Death” have been observed.
