Welcome to Sweden” Season 1 Episode 2 “Learn the Language” aired on July 17, 2014, at 9:00 p.m. on NBC. Bruce (Greg Poehler) took Swedish language lessons but encountered a few hitches. Emma (Josephine Bornebusch) wanted a couple time with Bruce, but living in her parents’ summer house made it impossible. The episode featured a special guest: Will Ferrell, as himself. Read more of our recap of this episode below.

The episode opened with Bruce in his Swedish language class, with each of his foreign classmates introducing themselves. After one Iranian goes off about how the Americans bombed his hometown, Bruce told everyone he’s from Canada. Unfortunately he didn’t know a thing about the country and had to pretend when the Iranian asked. As (bad) luck would have it, his Iranian classmate was pretty familiar with Canada. Fortunately, they bonded over their “hatred” for those bastards — the Americans.

Back at Emma’s parents’ house, Bruce was listening to Swedish audio tapes to supplement his learning with little success. Emma walked in and initiated cuddle time with him. Living at someone else’s house, the two haven’t gotten to spending private moments together, as Birger (Claes Månsson), Viveka (Lena Olin) and Gustaf (Christopher Wagelin) were always around. Today though, the three were at the market, so Bruce and Emma thought they would have a quickie right at the kitchen table. But just as Bruce had his pants down, Emma’s family walked in and caught them. Gustaf quickly took a shot of the couple with his mobile phone.

At breakfast, Viveka offered Bruce cinnamon buns, but he declined and said that he actually hates cinnamon. Viveka was shocked and ranted in Swedish, saying it was okay to hate Hitler, but to hate cinnamon buns was uncalled for. Bruce was taken aback by Viveka’s reaction, but all he could understand from what she was saying was “Hitler.”

Gustaf pacified the situation by announcing that he’s going to set up a reggae club. Would Bruce help him convince his celebrity clients in America to invest in his new venture? Viveka believed in Gustaf’s business skills. He had her full support, despite her son being without any experience and business training at all.

While in bed that night, Bruce received a text message from one of his clients, Will Ferrell, the celebrity, who was in town and who was inviting them for coffee. Emma said that they should go, as they needed this time together. But Bruce was cautious about why Will texted him.

Before heading for coffee with Will that morning, Emma talked to her mother, convincing them about going out for a date or a movie later. She really wanted her parents out of the house. But Viveka said that they haven’t been at the movies since that film with the ghost. Emma thought her mother was referring to “The Sixth Sense,” but Viveka actually meant “Ghostbusters,” which meant that Birger and Viveka haven’t had a movie date since the 1980s!

Finally, it was time to see Will, who is married to a Swede in real life. Will could understand and speak Swedish, and as he told Bruce, this was important if you love the person you’re with. Bruce told Will about his struggles with learning the language, so Will gave him an old cassette tape, which he said helped him learn. The tape had the sexiest voice giving instructions, which encouraged Bruce. And as to why Will invited him for coffee? He actually meant to ask Bruce if he could help him with his taxes, which he needed done immediately. How can Bruce say no now?

Will’s wife offered them cinnamon buns for snacks with coffee, which Bruce could not say no to as Emma was already glaring at him to eat it. Later at home, Bruce couldn’t stop vomiting. He really had an aversion to cinnamon buns.

While Bruce was in the bathroom, Emma prepared herself for a good night with her future husband. But as it was taking long for Bruce to get over feeling sick from the cinnamon buns, Emma ended up reading comic books in bed, which was actually sexy to Bruce. So they ended up kissing each other, but then Birgen had been looking from the window, frustrating Emma yet again. Her dad only wanted to ask Bruce about something and did not mean to interrupt. Then again, the couple time was canceled.

Later, Bruce as at Gustaf’s room, listening to the audio tape from Will. Emma grabbed the other part of the earphones and started listening as well. Turned out, the audio was porn, which was why the instructions had a sexy voice. This turned on the couple, so they started kissing again. But Gustaf was there on the top bunk of the bed, and he told them that there would be no kissing inside his bedroom.

They tried sleeping on the sofa bed Viveka had set up, after complaining to her mother about the sleeping arrangements. But before they could finally get their alone time, Emma went to check on her parents to make sure that they are all sound asleep in their room. What she saw instead were Birgen and Viveka having sex.

Exasperated, Emma decided that they check in to a hotel room for the rest of the week or until the people renting her place have moved out. It wouldn’t be long now, and they can finally have a real couple time!
