It was one fine day, and Calvin Conger of Punta Gorda Isles, along with his parents and girlfriend, went fishing in Charlotte Harbor in Florida. During their trip, Calvin caught a stingray, which he planned to use as shark bait. He was about to attach the stingray to the hook when he noticed something. The stinger of a baby ray was poking out. Calvin’s father, Harris, acted as midwife and assisted the mother stingray in giving birth. The family decided to release the mother and her two babies back to the water. Stingrays are viviparous. Thus, they give birth to live young. Specifically, they are ovoviviparous.
The rare and wonderful moment, which lasted a few minutes, was captured on cam by Calvin’s mother, Valerie. They first shared it with WINK News, and it has since become famous. Watch the video shared by the Congers below.
“It like flopped right out. It was weird… It makes me want to go fishing more. You just see the weirdest things, and it was an awesome moment,” Harris told WINK.
From space junk, unidentified sea creature, ancient shipwreck treasure, a giant squid, the mysterious eyeball to the rare goblin shark captured by a shrimp fisherman, Florida has caught, saw and witnessed unusual stuff on their coats. This stingray moment can now be added to the list.
