“Law & Order: SVU” ‘s will return in the fall, but it seems as if the plans for the upcoming season are well underway, as changes in the line- up of the unit’s roster are already getting shaken up as early as now, according to TV Line and Spoiler TV. Also, TV Guide managed to sit down with showrunner Warren Leight, who talked to them about the fate of one particular character and teased what was coming up for the seventeenth season. WARNING: This article may contain spoilers regarding the season sixteen finale and for season seventeen. Read on to learn more about the fates of your favorite characters in “Law & Order: SVU”!
Following the roller coaster ride finale of the sixteenth season of “Law & Order:SVU”, it has been revealed that Detective Nick Amaro (Danny Pino), according to an exclusive report on TV Line, will not be returning for season seventeen.
In the season finale, “Surrendering Noah”, Nick got shot twice, once in the leg, before shooting the criminal on trial, Johnny “D” Drake (Charles Harford), who had taken hostage and killed one of the court’s officers.
At the very end of the episode, Nick told his partner, Sergeant Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay), that he would be going to California as the Department would never promote him to become sergeant, and as his two children were there as well.
However, according to the report on Spoiler TV and on TV Line, Nick won’t be heading back home to New York, as the actor will not be returning for the seventeenth season.
According to an interview on TV Guide, show runner Warren Leight stated that he honestly didn’t want the character to leave, but with regards to Nick’s story, he knew that Nick now has nowhere to turn except to join his family out West. For him, it was the right time for Nick to finally have a fresh start again, and told TV Guide that the entire cast “felt like the exit was honored”, which meant that the timing was right.
According to Leight, the seventeenth season will start out with an exciting and fast paced case, which will help turn the tide over his absence as the two part season opener will be a “pretty dark episode”.
Olivia, according to the article, will also be getting promoted, as she was already getting ready to be promoted to lieutenant, and fans of the series will not have to wait for long to see who becomes her “number two”. Whoever that character will be will be promoted up to sergeant pretty fast within the season.
With regards to the rest of the team, there will be more room to explore what will be happening to the rest of the team.
Detective Amanda Rollins (Kelli Giddsh) will have a lot of new changes going her way, and fans will be seeing more of Assistant District Attorney Rafael Barba’s (Raul Esparza) personal life, as he is very much part of the team by now.
With regards to Detective Dominick “Sonny” Carisi, Jr. (Peter Scanavino), Leight has teased that he does want to become sergeant someday, but this seems unlikely for now as he is still new to the team, and is currently studying law. Another interesting thing that will be explored is what will happen to him once he passes the bar exam.
The showrunner also informed TV Guide that whereas last season’s theme was all about “family”, this upcoming season’s theme will be more about “transitions” or “passages”.
