Another high concept drama series is coming to AMC. The premium cable network has ordered “White City” to pilot from “Low Winter Sun” creator Chris Mundy and novelist-journalist Nick McDonell, together with John Dempsey. Read on to know more about the upcoming TV drama “White City.”

The show will feature journalists and diplomats from Western countries who are assigned to war-torn places and areas of conflict in Afghanistan. The plot, in a nutshell, focuses on Jon Liston, the lead character, who is described as a war junkie. Liston has lived for over 10 years in Kabul and has witnessed all sorts of violations to human rights. In his desire to talk with insurgent leaders and despite the warnings by the American embassy, Liston overstep and made a grave error that bore consequences. Bothered by guilt and frustration, Liston is now wondering if there is a reason for him, or any of his colleagues for that matter, to stay in Afghanistan.

Nick McDonell, who was doing coverages from Afghanistan and Iraq for Time, and John Dempsey, a long-time resident of Kabul who served as the former senior advisor to U.S. Ambassador Richard D. Holbrooke, gave the pilot idea to Chris Mundy. They will also co-write and produce the series.

“This is a story born from a creative team in Chris, John, Nick and Tom that has both an incredibly deep understanding of one of the most misunderstood regions of the world, and a fantastic sense of how to tell a compelling story about the lives of people who are drawn to the world’s hot spots,” said Joel Stillerman, executive vice president for original programming for AMC, in a press release published on Variety. He also reiterated that more than a war story, “White City” will be character driven and will be tackling sensitive and complicated issues faced by the world today.

“White City” will join the current trend of geopolitical drama shows that are slowly gaining a niche on television, with series like “Homeland,” “Tyrant” and “The Honourable Woman.” The subjects are sensitive, but relevant, serving as an eye-opener to those watching the series.

And that’s the news on “White City,” which has earned a pilot order on AMC. For the latest news, casting and production updates about this show, follow Movie News Guide (MNG).
