“Wicked” fans, mark your calendars. The hit Broadway musical will be coming to the big screen in 2016. Read on for further details.
Marc Platt, producer of “Into the Woods,” confirmed that Billy Elliot had just been signed to direct the movie, as reported by CNN. He says the process of developing the movie has already began but adds that there’s no rush for the production.
Platt adds that there’s an enormous pressure for the film adaptation of “Wicked.” No surprise there! Since it’s opening on Broadway 10 years ago, it has become the second-biggest musical after Disney’s “The Lion King.”
“We will make the movie, but like I said, the bar is really high. We’re going to scrutinize our work on the screenplay and our prep on the movie, and when we feel like it’s ready, okay. It’s in the works, it’s not in a rush,” he told Screen Crush.
Platt pleaded “Wicked” fans to be patient. He reminded them that it took 27 years to make “Into the Woods” into a film and 30 years for “Le Miserables.” Like they say, good things come to those you wait.
“Wicked” is based on a 1995 novel written by Gregory Maguire, “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.” It’s the prequel to “The Wizard of Oz.”
Casting for the much-awaited film has yet to be announced. But the last names to be included in the list were Lea Michele and One Direction’s Harry Styles. In 2004, Idina Menzel, popular for her role in “Frozen,” won a Tony for Best Leading Actress in a musical for her portrayal of the witch Elphaba. Maybe she would be interested in reprising her role after a decade?
