Do not expect a romantic reunion between Natasha Romanov/Black Widow and Bruce Banner/the Hulk in Avengers: Infinity War. According to Scarlett Johansson, the upcoming superhero movie will feature a scene between the two Avengers that made her feel so devastated because it hit too close to home.
The Sad Story of Natasha Romanov and Bruce Banner
After it was revealed that Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) has a secret family in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Marvel has been building up to the romantic tension between Natasha and Bruce. In fact, it was her that could calm the ten-foot green monster down (see below). However, after the Hulk jet off in Avengers: Age of Ultron, their blooming friendship was cut short and Banner was never seen again.
How the Hulk will survive the Gamemaster’s (Jeff Goldblum) gladiator battles in Thor: Ragnarok and then reunite with Avengers for Avengers: Infinity War remains to be seen. However, when they do meet again after years of separation, it might not be all hugs and kisses.
In an interview with Johansson for Bravo’s Inside the Actor’s Studio, the 32-year-old revealed that the relationship between Natasha and Bruce in the upcoming movie mirrors her real-life situation.
“I just finished Avengers: Infinity War. The first one. My character has this ongoing relationship with Mark Ruffalo’s character,” she recounted (via Comic Book Movie). “I had such devastation that day. I don’t know why. I was so devastated. It was something about this character that Mark plays, and this is something that should feel so solid and suddenly doesn’t or there’s… And it reminded me of so much of the things going on in my own life at the time…”
The Russo Brothers’ Avengers 3 and 4 will significantly change the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. The next two movies are expected to wrap up existing storylines. It is not surprising that the connection between Natasha and Bruce will finally be addressed, but it looks like their romance will end even before it begins.
The connection between Natasha and Bruce hinted in the past few movies has been polarizing. The decision to end it would be something that the fandom would welcome rather than grieve for. However, based on Johansson’s statement, it looks like even the hardened of fans will shed a tear.
Hopefully, neither heroes will see the end of their stories.
Scarlett Johansson’s Private Grief
Johansson did not share much details, but she did mention that the scene that she and co-star Ruffalo shared reminded her of her own experience. Back in January, it was reported that the 32-year-old and husband, art dealer Romain Duriac has been living separately since last year. In March, Johansson filed for divorce after over a year of marriage.
The two are in a tense battle over who will take primary custody of their two-year-old daughter, Rose. Four months after filing for divorce, Johansson has already moved and is now dating entertainment lawyer, Kevin Yorn.
