If you grew up anywhere near the first half of the nineties, you are well aware of the “Men in Black” series: Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones as Agents K and J, regulating hidden alien lives on earth, mind-wiping people left right and center. Well you’re in luck, because MIB is back in a fourth installment, and this time featuring a woman-in-black.
We’ve already had three installments with Smith and Jones as the protagonists, with Josh Brolin taking over the reins as a younger K in MIB-3. But you can’t keep secretive government agencies down, apparently, because a new film is now in the making. According to BBC’s newsbeat, producer Laurie Macdonald told the publication that the new “Men in Black” film will feature a prominent woman agent.
There have been a lot of rumors about whether the fourth film will see Will Smith reprise his role, with the majority consensus being no, Sony being keen to reinvigorate the franchise with some new blood. However Macdonald’s husband Walter Parkes said, “Never count Will out!”
He also explained the formula behind MIB’s success, and what a success it was, spinning off into an animated feature even.
“We tried to tell a story about those two characters and that relationship. It sounds silly because it’s a fun, science fiction comedy but when you work on these things you sort of try to find some thematic basis underneath it.”
Parks also added that they were looking to reinvent the series, saying that it was a wonderful world to get back to.
MIB has already featured a woman agent semi-prominently in the first movie, featuring the ravishing Linda Fiorentino, as a medical examiner drawn into K and J’s shadowy world, until she herself dons the suit as Agent L. While it is unlikely that she will return, hope springs eternal.
