“Wolf Hall” Season 1 Episode 5 “Crows” aired on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2015 at 9:00 p.m. on BBC Two. The penultimate episode to this series reveals the king’s frustrations, with Cromwell bearing the brunt. Find out what happened in the recap below.
Thomas Cromwell (Mark Rylance) regrets that he brought the king back to Wolf Hall, when he only wanted to see Jane Seymour (in the episode “The Devin’s Spit” air date: Feb. 11, 2015). King Henry VIII (Damian Lewis) is also smitten by her, which causes another problem for the monarch. The king divorced his first wife to marry his mistress, and now this? Cromwell catches the king approaching and talking to Jane (Kate Phillips), who definitely has a way about her. Learning about this, the Seymours discuss the possibilities with Cromwell. He advises her to pray if and when the king makes an attempt on her.
Anne Boleyn (Claire Foy) and her clan are aware of this threat too. She has became more pressured to produce a son for Henry. Her relationship with Cromwell, which had started to get better after her marriage to the king, is slowly turning sour as well. Especially when Cromwell refuses to compromise the king’s first daughter, Mary (with Queen Catherine), in favor of Anne’s daughter Elizabeth. She wants him betrothed to the prince of France. Cromwell refuses what Anne wants, telling her that it’s not the way he works.
Speaking of Catherine (Joanne Whalley), the Queen is weak and dying at her castle in Kimbolton. By the king’s orders, she’s not even allowed to see Mary before she succumbs. The church holds a rite for her and Henry and Anne hold a small memorial. There, Anne sees that her husband has really been eyeing Jane.
That night, fire engulfs Anne’s bedroom, but it was quickly fanned out before anything else happened. The king, who comforts his wife by saying he should’ve been in her room too, seems more interested in the burned fabric, though. Meanwhile, Cromwell suspects this accident was initiated by Anne herself. It was perhaps to get the king’s attention, or perhaps to strengthen her legitimacy and claim to the throne. In secret, she actually whispers to Cromwell about the prophecy of a queen burning in the fire and looks rather pleased that it happened to her.
During a jousting match, the king accidentally falls off his horse and “dies.” As people panic, Cromwell realizes that the king is still alive and immediately does what looks like CPR on him. Henry awakens and everyone cheers. Long live the king! Anne commands her husband to never join jousting tournaments again, but he berates her in public.
An ambassador from France arrives in England to seek Mary’s hand in marriage for France’s prince. The king refuses this as it will complicate his line of succession. Meanwhile, he still doesn’t have an actual heir. He explodes in frustration and attacks Cromwell. He began shouting at him while everyone is watching. Cromwell could only reply by praying to him.
Despite what happened, however, the king eventually sees that he still needs someone like Cromwell on his side. His problem with Anne persists and it’s pretty evident that the king is looking for a new wife.
