In terms of general entertainment, 2015 and 2016 are great years to be fans of iconic and huge franchises, as it saw the return of the likes of “Star Wars”, and next year, “The X-Files”. In anticipation for the return of “The X-Files” on Sunday, January 24, 2016 at 8:00 PM on FOX, several interviews and a featurette has been released in order to welcome old fans and new fans alike into the world of the unknown. WARNING: This article will contain spoilers for the revival of “The X-Files”.
Today, if one is asked, there are many television shows that can be touted as iconic. However, one of the most iconic and most popular television shows, which still has a huge fan base, is one that is finally returning to the airwaves as a six episode event.
In anticipation for the return of “The X-Files”, Entertainment Weekly has recently released a feauturette entitled “The X-Files Re-Opened”, which gives viewers a first glimpse at what to expect from the revived series.
According to stars Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny, as well as show creator Chris Carter and producer Darin Morgan, what is interesting about the revival is that fans will be able to see a good mix of stories within the episodes. There will be creatures and aliens, an episode that is a little bit more lighthearted, and episodes that deal heavily with the mythology at hand.
Certain elements of the mythology will come into play, such as the return of William B. Davis as “The Smoking Man”.
They will also touch a little bit on the difficulties that both Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) and Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) went through, especially with the first and last episode, which will feature their own individual struggles with the events that have happened.
According to a recent interview that Carter had with TV Line, he mentioned that he decided that the couple wouldn’t be together, romantically, when the revival begins, and this was confirmed in the featurette. There, he said that the two are in a different stage in their relationship, especially as it has already been seven or eight years since the last film they were in.
They also teased that the effects will be bigger and better, and that the revival will be more action heavy than usual.
Aside from returning characters such as Annabeth Gish’s FBI Agent Monica Reyes, they featured Joel McHale’s character, Tad O’ Malley.
According to the featurette, McHale’s character will be the reason why Scully and Mulder get sucked into the world of the X-Files again.
Duchovny, in a recent interview with TV Line, after being asked whether he would be open to doing an event series like this upcoming one every year, said that he would be open to do it, if it served their characters well.
He also mentioned that among the episodes for the upcoming revival, his favorite is Darin Morgan’s “Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster”, which will air on February 1, 2016.
He also talked at length about how comfortable it was to work with Anderson again, which was also apparent in the featurette.
