Twentieth Century Fox is expanding the X-Men universe with the introduction of the new generation of heroes, the New Mutants. In the past few months, the studio has been announcing the cast of characters who will join the upcoming movie and the actors who will play them.
The New Mutants
The first to be announced was Maisie Williams, the British actor best known as Arya Stark in Game of Thrones. In the upcoming New Mutants movie, the 20-year-old will play the role of Rahne Sinclair a.k.a. Wolfsbane. According to earlier reports, Williams’ character will struggle to reconcile her religious beliefs with her power to turn into a wolf.
Williams joins her Game of Thrones co-star and friend Sophie Turner in the X-Men universe. The 21-year-old redhead starred as Jean Grey in last year’s X-Men: Apocalypse and will next appear in X-Men: Dark Phoenix.
Earlier this year, Fox also announced that Anya Taylor-Joy signed up as Illyana Nikolievna Rasputina a.k.a. Magik, a Russian girl who has learned sorcery and uses teleportation discs to travel. In the comic books, she was the sister of Colossus, a member of the X-Men who appeared alongside Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool.
Joy also previously starred in M.Night Shyamalan’s Split as one of the female teenagers kidnapped by a man who has 23 different personalities played by James McAvoy. The 21-year-old will reprise the role of Casey Cooke in Glass.
Meanwhile, Henry Zaga of Netflix’s hit teen drama 13 Reasons Why also recently joined the cast. He will play the role of Roberto de Costa a.k.a. Sunspot, a mutant who has the ability to manipulate solar energy.
Last week, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that another Netflix star is joining the New Mutants movie. Charlie Heaton of Stranger Things was recently cast as Sam Guthrie a.k.a Cannonball, a teenager who is invulnerable when he propels himself into the air (like a cannon ball).
Last but not the least is Blue Hunt, a newcomer who will play the role of Danielle Moonstar. The mutant has the capability to telepathically create illusions of her opponent’s fear or desires.
Completing the cast is Rosario Dawson who is in talks for the role of Dr. Cecilia Reyes, a doctor who can generate a protective bio-field around herself. She will assume the role of mentor to the New Mutants.
New Mutants Movie Details
Earlier reports claimed that Professor Charles Xavier (McAvoy) will also appear in the movie along with Storm (Alexander Shipp). However, Fox is yet to confirm whether both characters will appear in the spin-off. Meanwhile, Michael Fasbender already stated that his character Magneto will not be involved in the upcoming movie.
The New Mutants movie will be directed by Josh Boone. He is best known for helming the popular teen drama The Fault In Our Stars. Boone will also write the script with Knate Lee.
In an interview with EW, the filmmaker promised that the upcoming movie will take a different approach from other X-Men movies. “We are making a full-fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe,” he explained. “There are no costumes. There are no supervillains. We’re trying to do something very, very different.”
Simon Kinberg and Karen Rosenfelt will sit as producers.
The movie is expected to start filming around early July this year or around the same time as Deadpool 2. It will be released on April 13, 2018.
The New Mutants is created by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod. First published in the 1980s, the franchise was the first X-Men comic book spin-off and was meant to replace the original X-Men who started of as teenagers but, after two decades, have grown older.
