Your Name (Kimi no Na wa) became the highest grossing anime movie in history surpassing Spirited Away. Ahead of its nationwide release, the studio behind the movie released a new trailer for the U.S. audience. Watch below.
Your Name International Trailer
This is not the first time that the anime movie ventured into the States. Last year, it opened in selected cinemas in the U.S. for one week in order to qualify for the Oscars. Unfortunately, it was not nominated.
However, it might receive the recognition it deserves when more people come out to see it next month. Funimation will bring Your Name back to U.S. cinemas. To tease the movie’s re-opening, the studio released an English-dubbed trailer for the international audience.
The trailer features the English-language version of the soundtrack from RADWIMPS. According to screenwriter and director Makoto Shinkai, the music is essential in telling the story of Mitsuha and Taki. “Melody and lyrics must be something inseparable for RADWIMPS,” he was quoted by ComicBook. “For all that, I cannot respect and thank them enough for making these wonderful English versions to entertain international audience.”
The short video also gives the audience a glimpse at how Mitsuha and Taki will sound like now that they are speaking in English. However, the movie will also be available in Japanese with English subtitles.
Your Name will be released in selected theaters in the U.S. starting April 7. Funimation Films has already started selling tickets on their website.
Your Name Movie Details
Kimi no Na wa or Your Name follows Mitsuha and Taki, two high school students who live separate and different lives. However, their fates become entangled when, one day, they suddenly switched bodies. Mitsuha wakes up in Taki’s body and Taki had to live Mitsuha’s life. Eventually, the two decided that they no longer want to be strangers, so they try to meet. However, it seems like distance is not the only element that is keeping them apart.
The trailer, as well as the synopsis of the movie, focuses on the body-swap aspect. However, viewers will eventually find that there is more to the story. For one, Makoto Shinkai is known for producing beautiful, heart-warming stories such as Voices of a Distant Star and 5 Centimeters Per Second. In addition, the anime movie is highly revered for its beautiful art. Read MNG’s review of Your Name here.
The movie received critical acclaim all over the world. It also grossed over $326 million dollars across eight countries. For comparison, Spirited Away took home $275 million from worldwide box-office. It also landed as the fourth highest-grossing movie in the Japanese-only box office, following Avatar, Frozen and Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away at Number 1.
